OIC.  That I didn't know, I've never been bothered to try to uninstall it.

I generally don't either but I got bored one day

Office 15 will be a big release, Microsoft says, and this will mark the first time it will simultaneously update all of its Office-based cloud services, servers, and mobile and PC clients for Office, Office 365, Exchange, SharePoint, Lync, Project, and Visio.

Sounds risky.

Well Balmer keeps saying that 8 is the riskiest Windows yet, so I guess they figured they may as well go all in.

i wonder if they'll update Mac versions at the same time?

Seems like they typically stagger them a year, and the current Mac Office looks nothing like the current Windows Office, so my guess would be no.  After all, if you're taking a risk, why would you focus on the version of your product made for your competitor's hardware?

I think it could be great for tablets and "transformer" type computers but for a mouse and keyboard?  Are you kidding?

I don't know if this is still the case, but for a long time the Mac BU was in Microsoft's gaming division, and worked on a separate code base from the Office developers.  They seem to be working toward more consistency (Outlook for Mac was a huge jump over Entourage).  I heard years ago the reason for the organization strategy was because the Mac BU was profitable, so they used it to cover losses from the Xbox launch.

No...well, I like the Start Screen.

The Start Screen is no different than the Start Menu except it's in the form of a screen instead of a menu.  If we step back from are reluctance for change, the start screen that's in the Developer's Preview is likely very different than the start screen in the Windows 8 RTM and likely the Consumer Preview that's coming out in February.  I have no problem with the desktop being deprecated to "app" status, which is what it is in the Dev Preview.  It just requires thinking differently.

Also, when Windows 8 RTMs (and possibly in the Consumer Preview) I'm sure there will be a way to "hide" the start screen so that the desktop is in the foreground,  probably in the "professional/enterprise" versions by default.  What you'll lose with by not using the Start Screen is parts of the Windows Store and I doubt business would want their users to be buying apps on their work computers.  But, at some point, probably in the near future there will be Metro apps for work, that will require the Start Screen.  In "Windows 9", we'll be done with the desktop, I believe.

Yeah the original Xbox was a loss leader foot-in-the-door strategy for sure, but when you've got coffers like MS you can do that, and it clearly paid off for them.

There's always integration problems between all this crap and they're going to roll it all out at once? Yuck.

For some reason the people who influence decisions around here have been pushing us to early-adopt Office products as soon as they drop. Ugh.

Probably so they aren't constantly dealing with document compatibility issues

Huh, our clients are government clients, early adoption causes more compatibility issues than staying put for a bit. Most compatibility issues are user error anyway.

It's about "features". Never mind if they know what features are new or not.

Anyway, I wouldn't care if they would invest in a better way for us to upgrade computers. I prefer to wait for SP1 with all MS products, but early adoption has its perks as a professional.

That certainly explains why I constantly get the "can you send it to me in .DOC format?  I don't have Word 2007"...

Kev I said document compatibility.  Most of the machines in our environment are running 2007 or 2010 now, but we still have a few running 2003, and even with the docx compat pack you still get weird issues from time to time.  I was just speculating anyway, sounds like your bosses just have "ooh shiny" syndrome.

In defense of newer versions of Office, everyone I know who actually uses Office apps for a living loves 2007 and 2010.  I usually just use Notepad

Copy: handling confirmations and interrupts

gawicks asked:

Please please display all the copy 'error dialogs' after the copying has completed so I don't have to sit in front of the machine all the time.

We have two types of user interaction that can occur during a copy job - we break these into two groups, “confirmations” and ”interrupts.” Confirmations like “Are you sure you want to permanently delete this file?” need to be completed before the copy operation can start. Interrupts are issues that the system encounters while copying, things like “File not found,” “File in use,” and file name conflicts.

The system presents all confirmations before it starts to move or copy files. While copying, any interrupt issues are queued and presented once the system has completed all the work it can. In the beta, we’ve made improvements in how confirmations are presented, making sure they don’t get lost amongst existing running copies.
