God yes!  In that situation, against that pitcher, you have to bunt.  We've had exactly the same situation against Hudson (even with Zimmerman at the plate, I believe) and it ended EXACTLY the same way.

No.

This team is incapable of learning from history.

Bunting is a sucker's play.

Sorry. I just think you are taking situations to a ridiculous extreme. Zimmerman against Hudson in that situation has happpened... twice? Three times? Zimmerman with a runner on hitting an RBI has happened... dozens of times?

No.

And Zimmerman will always ground into a double play against Hudson and we'll always be a losing franchise.

Now I'm not watching this one...just reading MLB line that says the last run scored of a FC, HROD to Desmond to Zim to Marrero to Espinosa, and that Bourn scored from 2B? Is that right?

Can someone explain that play? I've seen it when I coached Little League, but...

You are telling me that every time Hudson has pitched he has induced a infield ground ball from Zimmerman? I don't believe it.

If it's the winning run at third in the last inning I'd ask Zimm to bunt. That's it.

And Zimmerman will always ground into a double play against Hudson and we'll always be a losing franchise.

Ramos ran to third when Bourn went to third... no one was home. Literally.

Zimmerman was batting .186/.222/.209 against Hudson in 43 ABs with countless DPs prior to tonight. The bunt was the winning strategy in that situation. Oh well, it doesn't matter at this point because Balester choked.

A comebacker to the pitcher. He runs Bourne back to second and throws to Desmond (a bit prematurely) so Bourne heads for 3B. Desmond throws to Zimmerman but Zimmerman drops the ball so Bourne heads back to 2B. In the meantime Jones has reached 2B. So Jones heads back to 1B. Zimmernman throws to Marrero who then runs Jones back to 2B in a rundown. In the meantime Bourne has taken off for 3B. Marrero throws to Espinosa who tags out Jones. But in the meantime, Ramos was covering 3B so when Bourne gets there he notices that no one is covering home plate so he heads home to score easily.

I think Jones had already tagged 2B so technically he occupied that base and all Zimmerman had to do was tag out Bourne without letting get by him.

Zimmerman has 8 hits vs 4 GIDP against Hudson.  True, Zimmerman's been weak against Hudson but the odds would still be in favor of a hit vs. a GIDP.

It wasn't the *winning* strategy, it was the get one guy to third strategy early in a game with plenty of baseball left.

Zimmerman was batting .186/.222/.209 against Hudson in 43 ABs with countless DPs prior to tonight. The bunt was the winning strategy in that situation. Oh well, it doesn't matter at this point because Balester choked.

Zimmerman is batting .186 against Hudson in 43 AB and grounded into 4 DP before the 5th tonight.

Yes, Zimmerman should have been bunting.

Countless?  Not at all.  There were 4, eminently countable for most.

Nope. Not that early in the game when a good swing could have resulted in men on and a run in.

But he doesn't get good swings against Tim Hudson.

Now he's not getting good swings against Kimbrel.

Hudson is tossing a regulation baseball from a regulation distance. It was way to early in the game to be playing small ball and giving up an out when the next guy up is less experienced and no more likely to get that run in.
But he doesn't get good swings against Tim Hudson.

Zimmerman had a rough night.

He looked like Werth on that strike down the middle of the plate.
