Kraft has up to now told the "he put it in his pocket" story, but this is the most detail.

Kraft should be honored that PUTIN! approved of the ring.  He may have liked his finger more than the ring, then Kraft would be in real trouble.

PUTIN!'s arch nemeses, the punk band wussy Riot, have a new video out taking on the Russian oil industry.

We definitely needed a Putin thread.  Vladimir Putin is probably my favorite world leader.  I mean, he's a total badass.  He does what he wants and doesn't give a rat's ass what the rest of the world thinks.  When he invaded Georgia, George Bush had several meetings with him telling him he needed to stop.  Putin basically asked him, "And if I don't you're going to do what, exactly?"  When faced with the minor issue that term limits meant that he would no longer be able to serve as President of Russia Putin simply decided to create a new position in the Russian government that his puppet President could appoint him to allowing him to continue to run the country.  Most recently Putin has offered asylum to Edward Snowden providing he stop releasing information that could potentially embarrass the United States.  The United States has threatened any country that offers asylum to Snowden with sanctions.  But Putin doesn't care.  Sanctions don't scare a man like Putin.  He does what he wants.  And somehow, I'm willing to bet the U.S. government will not exercise any sanctions against him.  He's too scary.

There have been some others who took this a whole lot farther...take Jean-Bédel Bokassa: pronounced himself "Emperor" complete with self-coronation a la Napoleon, ate his cabinet (!), and then killed a lot of schoolkids with a hammer during an afternoon break from an international conference he was hosting.

I didn't believe it, so I looked him up- apparently crime does pay

Quote
On 20 September 1979, French paratroopers deposed him and re-installed Dacko as president. Bokassa went into exile in France where he had chateaux and other property bought with the money he had embezzled.[1] After his overthrow in 1979, Central Africa reverted to its former name and status as the Central African Republic. In his absence, he was tried and sentenced to death. He returned to the Central African Republic in 1986 and was put on trial for treason and murder. In 1987, he was cleared of charges of cannibalism, but found guilty of the murder of schoolchildren and other crimes. The death sentence was later commuted to life in solitary confinement, but just six years later, in 1993, he was freed. He lived a private life in his former capital, Bangui, and died in November 1996.

Yes, he has it.  No, he's not giving it back.  And Snowden can stay as long as he doesn't release any more information that could be embarrassing to "[Russia's] American partners."

It is much harder to disappear prominent people in this technologically advanced society than it was during the Cold War. I would say that they are probably safe enough so long as they don't do another protest.

http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/borowitzreport/2014/02/sochi-hotel-guests-complain-about-topless-portraits-of-putin-in-rooms.html

Quote
With the Olympics underway, hundreds of visitors to Sochi are complaining that they checked into expensive hotel rooms only to find them decorated with seminude portraits of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The portraits, showing Mr. Putin shirtless and riding a variety of mammals, adorn the walls of virtually every hotel room constructed especially for the Olympics and were created at a cost of over two million dollars, Olympic officials said.

All the nagging about bad hotels is getting annoying.  Nothing could be worse than motels around Lake Placid circa 1980.

They're hosting the ECAC Hockey Championships this year.  I was thinking about going; but now....

After Sochi, they're moving all the Putin portraits to the Lake Placid hospitality locations.   They make great shower curtains.
