Now that the team is winning, 'who gives a crap' becomes the mantra.

Uhh, yep?

Well, for a long time, the Lerners weren't just businessmen.  They were greedy, cheap, lots of other stuff.  People who thought otherwise had their heads in the clouds, even when they didn't just offer up a 'who gives a crap.'

OK off my soapbox.

how many owners of any professional team are not businessmen?

Plenty -  some are second/third generation owners,  some (Woody johnson)  are rich kids with toys,  and sone are 'businessmen'  who treat sports are a hobby not a business

Marge Schott wasn't, but there aren't many exceptions.

This site breaks it down pretty well.  There is a column for 2013 salaries.

Is Chad Tracy really a plus for us at $750K?

He's getting $1M this year, a great insurance policy for the inevitable Zimmerman 10-30 game DL stint.

Tracy is a beast. His leadership brings some bench/backup player unity, it's awesome.

Werth seems like the only guy who is dramatically overpaid.

Factor in that he's the first free agent, and had to be overpaid.  But overpaid he is.

Werth seems like the only guy who is dramatically overpaid.

Yeah, he's not.  How about first "statement" free agent?

Stammen is woefully underpaid.

No doubt. I really want Stammen and Desmond to be Nats for life.

Stammen has eventual journeyman written all over him- desmond needs to be extended soon (unless you don't think last year was his real level of play) along with Zimmermann

Certainly that contract was a fraction of Werth's, but it was a big signing, bringing in an ex-All Star as the team was moving to DC. Of course it predated the Lerner era.
