As JCA said, waiting for January free agents or settling for Lannan is a way better move when we're filling the #5 spot in the rotation behind SS, Gio, JZ, and Ross, rather than filling the #1 spot with Jason Marquis.

Brian Goodwin has shown nothing but promise and athleticism and now he's taking the AFL behind the woodshed. I'm concerned about Bourn - he'll probably be an overpay, since Werth is a far better leadoff hitter which makes Bourn basically a defense/steals-first player. I'd be okay with Harper in CF until Goodwin gets ready (Harper shouldn't be the Hulk for another couple years), keeping LaRoche, and finding a LF for 2-3 years to replace Morse. Groom Moore to replace LaRoche at first.

I would be too. I could live with it for a year, especially if a prospect for Morse was good.

I wouldn't say that Detwiler has "ace" stuff. I don't even think Jordan Zimmermann does.

Goodwin is a full year and change away. Meyer is much further. Rendon is the closest to being ready. And he'll still start next season in Double A.

See what we can trade Morse for. I'd like a starting pitcher. Pick up Laroche's option. Sign Upton for a few years. Gives Danny a season to fix the inconsistency. If he can't, and Rendon is ready, bring him up and play him at second.

That sets us up nicely for the future in the next few years. Meyer/Purke can take Detwiler's spot. Rendon can move to first or third. Werth could move to first, giving us an outfield of Upton/Goodwin/Harper.

I think Goodwin and Meyer will be in DC sometime in 2014. I'd definitely bring in another starter or two for next year, but not big money guys on long term deals.

I really don't like Upton. He is terrible offensively, and you can probably get comparable defense much cheaper elsewhere.

I'm sure Rendon is up next year. The team has the pieces in house, and they all fit logically. I wouldn't mess with it.

This is my version of 2013:

CF-Victorino on a two year deal
RF-Werth
3B-Zim
LF-Harper
1B-Morse
SS-Desmond
2B-Espinosa
C-Ramos
P

Then bargain bin it for the 5 spot, maybe a Jeremy Guthrie, who looked much better in KC.

BJ Upton is great defensively. Just take him away from that crappy stadium and on a team that actually cares. Oh and he's 28. Which means he's just entering his baseball prime. And you're not offensively terrible if you hit 28 home runs and steal 30 bases. Most of that came down the stretch when the Rays were in the hunt. Give him a game that matters and he is a performer.

Meyer will not be ready by 2014. He won't have the stamina. Not unless they use him out of the bullpen.

This team has no where to put Rendon as he has yet to prove he can play second base.

still need OF, 2B and SP

I love Danny's defense though.  If we can find a legit OF and hit Danny 8th we're o.k.  We do need a SP if we're going to let EJax go.

I'd actually prefer a bullpen upgrade over a starter.

Upton on a four year deal? That's what it'll probably take.

I would be fine with Lannan as a #5. A guy who will pitch 180+ innings with an ERA of around 3.7 or lower isn't bad. I'd like better, but it'd be solid.

This

And this time of year he makes a great long reliever for those nights like Edwin had in game three.

- Rendon needs at least a half year in AA and another half season in AAA. I saw him at the end of the year. He couldn't handle AA pitching, to my eye, and he was batting about .150.

- Goodwin looks great. AAA all next year, maybe a September call-up

I want to add onto my statement on Bourn and center field.

I always thought Werth looked good as a leadoff guy, but seeing he has a line this year of .309/.388/.450 in 149 ABs make me comfortable keeping him there next year.

I say, if LaRoche leaves, our focus should be best available, not leadoff. You can have Werth leadoff most nights and sprinkle in Lombardozzi (.273/.312/.367, 245 ABs) behind him. I would be happy with Upton, but I just don't want us to pay Bourn massive money to attract him here. I would rather try out a T-Mo/Bernadina platoon in LF than pay Bourn huge money.

Best case? Find a way to keep LaRoche.

God, Upton had a .298 OBP this season. Can we really have 3 guys in the lineup with terrible on base percentages?

Also, I tthink Ryan Madson makes it to DC this offseason.  Between Werth and Rizzo, and his desire for a one year make good deal, the fit is there.

good thought on Madson, but I think a lefty power reliever might be more important.  I've said before that Matt Thornton :az: might be a good fit.  At this point, he just has a year left at $5.5MM, with a $1MM buyout of $6MM for 2014.  Price is a bit high for a set up guy, but maybe you can get him in a salary dump.  I don't think Madson would be cheaper, and Thornton is healthier.

Done. Easy. 20+ home runs with 20+ stolen bases from my good fielding CFer? I'd love that.

The way it seems to work is there is always a pretty good guy out there who misestimates the market and is looking for a safe landing spot in january / February.  That was Jackson last year.  Before, it used to be the "LAC" move because we need an FA to have a competitive top of the rotation.  Now, what we are arguing about is 5th starters and swing men.  Getting a #3 type starter to fill the last slot in your rotation is better than having a #3 become your ace.

yeah while jackson was terrible in his playoff performance, he got the job done for what he is and what we wanted him to do.  hats off to him.

I'm surprised no one is arguing for Josh Hamilton. It's certainly  tempting to think

new second baseman is pretty much official.

another starter.

and probably josh hamilton.  but that's the least of my concerns.  def 2B and SP.

After this game? Yeah. I'll take Hamilton. I was on the "Stay the course" train but not after this.

I am in major reaction mode right now. That was historically bad

Hey, I'm with you. If we are gonna spend big, get Hamilton and freak it.
