May indicate he is learning to pitch.

The radio guy said that he didn't have command of his fastball. Also, the defense let him down a couple times which elevated his pitch count. He didn't have his strikeout stuff going, but he kept his team in the game.

sometimes that happens in the minors; I happened to see Taylor Jordan pitch down in Myrtle Beach last year--there were errors and also a few hits where the defense could have made plays but didn't.  So, his stat line looked worse than he pitched.

Repeating myself: we go to Harrisburg at least once a season. Each game, I've seen ground balls hit and, out of habit, thought, "OK, that's an out". Comes from having watch Zimmerman and Desmond, and other major leaguers. Saw a Harrisburg 3B stand and watch a grounder than Zimmerman would have snagged on a dive and probably gotten the batter out.

Zim may have gotten to it, but he would have airmailed the throw over the first baseman's head.

Ah. Some good news! According to the Washington Post, he's working to add a new pitch to his repertoire, which may help explain some of his struggles early in the season.  He's been working on adding a slider, but it's definitely a work in progress at this point.

Quote
>>> A.J. Cole, the right-handed starter and Nationals’ second-rated prospect, has been working on adding a slider to his pitching repertoire. He debuted it in spring training and has been using it early this season. He already throws a mid-90s fastball and a change-up, along with an occasional curveball. But Cole, 22, wanted a hard breaking ball to mix in as well.

“It's not going to be an early in the count pitch yet,” he said. “Maybe later. Either they're going to swing and miss it or watch it for a strike.”

Cole, listed at 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds, is working toward being more consistent with the slider. “It's been hit or miss with him,” Manager Brian Daubach said. “He's throwing it and he sticking with it and convicted to it.”

Overall, Cole has a 3.63 ERA over five starts with Harrisburg this season with 16 strikeouts and only four walks. His biggest goal this season is to improve his secondary pitches.

“My change-up, I have a lot of confidence throwing that in any count,” he said. “Breaking ball, I do have confidence in it but I struggle to be consistent with it. ... It's just the consistency part of it. When I attack hitters, just trying not to be too fine and trying to get ahead.”

between Cole, Hill, and Trienen, we've got some pretty nice pitching depth at or near the MLB level, with Johanson and Giolito a couple of years behind.

AJ Cole complete game shutout last night: 7 IP 4 H 0 R 0 BB 8 K. Has a 2.25 ERA in Harrisburg.

He would be lined up to pitch next on Thursday, the day the Nats need a starter.

don't see them adding him to the 40 man roster at this point when they have guys like Treinen who can also spot start.

Pitchers of the Week for the week ending May 18

Eastern League
A.J. Cole, Harrisburg
(1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 G, 1 GS, 1 CG, 1 SHO, 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 0 HBP, 0 BB, 8 K)
Cole has enjoyed success at Double-A -- he owns a 2.21 ERA in 15 starts at the level -- but there was still something he hadn't achieved there or at any other stop in the Minors, a shutout. He achieved that -- and his first career complete game -- Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader against New Britain. His eight strikeouts and seven innings pitched were both season highs. The Nationals' No. 2 prospect is 4-2 with a 2.25 ERA, 34 strikeouts and just seven walks in eight starts (40 innings).
