Nice! I hope he's finally starting to turn that corner and becoming a more consistent pitcher. Great start.

Wow that Mike Morse trade is looking pretty good with AJ Cole pitching great in the minors and Ian Krol looking like a potential long term bullpen piece up here.

Made BA's Hot Sheet at #7 this week

http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/prospect-hot-sheet-june-14-joey-gallo-slugs-seven-home-runs/

Quote
7. A.J. Cole, rhp, Nationals
Team: high Class A Potomac (Carolina)
Age: 21
Why He’s Here: 2-0, 0.69, 13 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 21 SO

The Scoop: Cole has had a yo-yo career since signing with the Nationals for $2 million as a fourth-round pick three years ago. He showed flashes of dominance (albeit in inconsistent spurts) in 2011 before the Nationals traded him to the Athletics in the deal that brought Gio Gonzalez to Washington. His eight starts for the A’s in the high Class A California League last year were a disaster, but then he settled down upon a demotion to low Class A Burlington. Oakland traded him back to the Nationals after the 2012 season and . . . Cole again has had his ups and downs with high Class A Potomac. At his best he’s been dominant, which explains his 10.4 strikeouts and 2.3 walks per nine innings, while his ERA is a more pedestrian 4.16.

Now if Purke, Solis, and Giolito get healthy we could have a surplus of starting pitching

we have a ton of solid starters in the system, probably nobody that projects as a #1 like Meyer did (maybe Gioloto?), but lots of 2-3-4 guys, several of whom may end up in the pen.

I don't know that Meyer profiled as a #1. I know many seemed to think he'd be a closer. Giolito and Cole both seem to profile as front line starters maybe not #1 per se, but #2 is a definite possibility.

Not sure about Meyer being a #1. AJ Cole hasn't shown much yet to lead us to believe he'll be elite but he is young. Has the tools.

Giolito if he gets healthy is a stud. He is still only 18. This organization has taken good care of pitchers. We may not see him for another 4 or 5 years but he has the potential to be an ace.

I am still excited to see Purke once he gets away from his injury. He is only 22. Would not be surprised if he someday makes it to the big club and is a very, very, very good pitcher.

Between Solis, Robbie Ray, and Taylor Jordan you have some young guys who you hope may grow into something at the back of the rotation.

Our pitching in the minors is a strength if Solis, Purke, and Giolito bounce back like they should.  We are very weak at catcher and outfield.  Need to draft better in both of those areas.

Speaking of catchers, anyone have a report on Cole Leonida? He's having a pretty nice year at the plate for Potomac (6 HRs .360 OBP). Wasn't he supposed to be a glove-first guy out of Georgia Tech? Seems like he might develop into a decent back-up.

Doesn't a healthy purke profile as a number 1?

he did coming out, but he's not showing much so far, struggling at Low-A this year.  He's still only 23, but you'd expect that he would be further along at this point.

I think you have to spot him some time for injury. When I say profile, I really mean ceiling, and most guys never reach their ceiling. I' trying to remember something I once heard- it's along the lines of the best pitching prospect is two pitching prospects

If Purke is healthy and reaches his ceiling, he's absolutely a legit #1. Him and Giolito have the stuff to be aces. Just have to be healthy and prove it.

Can we please not crown the high school guy an ace before he throws a single damn pitch after having TJ surgery?

I'm saying that if he reaches his potential he will be an ace and that he has the highest upside of any of our minor leaguers

Looking at one more Nationals pitcher, the team drafted A.J. Cole in the fourth round of 2010, but a year later traded him to Oakland along with Derek Norris as part of the Gio Gonzalez deal.

As a member of the Athletics, Cole started well enough going 6-3, 2.07 at Class-A Burlington over 19 starts and 95 innings, then hitting the wall at the High-A California League with an 0-7, 7.82 record over eight starts and 38 innings.

That was enough for Oakland to trade Cole back to the Nationals last Hot Stove session (as part of the three-way deal that included Mike Morse), where at High-A Potomac this year, the right-hander seems to have righted his ship with a 4-2, 4.16 mark over 13 starts and 71.1 innings.

Cole has allowed 72 hits, but just 18 walks (1.262 WHIP), and fanned 81 hitters, winning the circuit Pitcher of the Week honors twice this season. That probably also provides some redemption to himself and probably the team who selected him in the first place.

As indicated, Washington is solid with their young pitchers and the 21-year old Cole's continued success could mean time at Harrisburg before 2013 winds down, and maybe time with Jordan in a Nationals uniform by sometime next year.

That's actually wrong. Cole started in High A and was demoted. Not the other way around.

6 IP 5 H 3 R 2 ER 0 BB 5 K tonight for Cole.

Gotta be encouraged by his 87 K/18 BB ratio this season.
