If he could be a hybrid of Dunn's patience and Guz's aggressiveness, that'd be a dangerous bat.

I'd rather Dunn take strike three every time with a man on first and third than to ground into a weak 4-6-3 DP like Zimm and Pudge so often do.

As much as I like Dunn, I'd rather he hit .318/.365/.645 than .252/.376/.550 with less GIDP.

I'd love if he'd slug that type of number... but Dunn is what he is... a .250 hitter... I just don't see that changing at this stage in the game.

Dunn is the guy you want to talk to if you like holding your bat back on 2 strike pitches and not learning how to play situations correctly.

BTW, the league average for swinging at strikes is 71%

Dunn is at 74%... so, Dunn actually swings at more strikes than the average hitter.

And wouldn't you know it... Dunn has a lower looking at strike 3% (25%) than Guzman (44%), Harris (44%), Willingham (41%), Kennedy (29%) and Desmond (26%).

Kind of shoots holes in your theory that he takes strike three often.

Dunn swings if you can hit the pitch. I wonder if you could eliminate corner clippers and redo his percentage . . .

I'm just going off the info provided by baseball-reference.

Would be interesting if you could eliminate certain pitches, as you said, to see how the percentages change.

Dunn actually had the same number of hits with RISP in fewer PAs than Zimmerman last year :stir:

Offensively by VORP, Desmond is looking pretty damn good at this point.  9th among all SS's, ahead of Jeter, FLOP, Hardy among others.

Better than average, well above replacement, and his D has been less error prone than I was fearing.  All in all, a GREAT start to 2010, and no reason at all it isn't sustainable.  In fact, I bet he improves offensively as the year progresses.

I didn't see much use in quoting that since I'm sure most frown upon walks with RISP anyway, esp from the designated slugger in the lineup.

But if they pitch around him and don't give him good pitches to hit, I see no reason to frown on Dunn.  Rather, the responsibility shifts to the next hitter in the lineup.

Every time Dunn steps into the box there's a RISP.

True but at this point I wouldn't say he has a big advantage over Zimmerman in that regard.

Yup, it's part of the job description, and it's a nod to his discipline as well.

In fact, this year, Zimm is averaging a HR every 13 at bats... Dunn is at 14.

Chief, maybe you should split all this stat talk into an all encompassing 2010 stats thread.

Might keep the clutter away from the Desmond thread.

per nats.com:

Quote
"I think he's just played a great shortstop, and he's getting better and better with the bat," Jim Riggleman said before Tuesday's game. "He plays with no fear. He's really a heads-up player, a leader on the field. He's a special player. This guy is 24 years old, but he's breaking in at the right time. You want him there about 23, 24 years old. He got some time in September, and it's helped him now. He's got a chance to be one of the elite shortstops in baseball."

and NJ has some more on how impressed Riggs has been with Dessie

bump

from mlb.com:

Quote
Nationals rookie shortstop Ian Desmond is hitting .387 (12-for-31) with four doubles, a homer and five RBIs and one stolen base in his last 10 games

hopefully he keeps this up and plays better defense.  it'd be nice to see him cut down on the errors the last two months of the season, draw a few more walks and continue to collect extra base hits.

People keep track of every other damn number in baseball so are there any reports on what the expected improvement year to year for a player is?

For example by what percentage does the average rookie's BA/OBP/SLG increase in their second season of play.

He doesn't have any player comparisons on his baseball reference page as of yet.
