No it has nothing to do with the Lerners (although so far, so good this offseason by the owners).  I have faith in Rizzo and his staff and I believe he, along with Riggleman and his coaches, will come to the right decision.

of course it doesn't.

Hasn't stopped the myna birds from chirping about it in the past. The Lerners don't know thing one about running a team, and why would they, that's why they hired a COO.

I think Bowden's cockamamie ideas of how to build a winning team out of misfit toys came from the fluke first half in 2005, and somehow he won everyone over. I have no proof of these assertions whatsoever. They are just mind facts.

I wouldn't be so sure about the latter.
Hopefully we re-sgn Dunn to an extension for several years.

I wouldn't mind this but Carlos Pena is a free agent next year!!!

Brandon Webb is too!! :az: :az: :az:

Salaries are cleared up!

:punch: :punch: I'm already thinking about next offseason.

I don't fault the Lerners making stupid moves, I fault them for not stepping up and spend (in the past).  This offseason they have done a pretty decent job and I gave them credit for it.

Ladies and gentlemen ... we have found our shortstop of the future!

HR (Harold Reynolds) on Ian Desmond:
"This is my guy right here though, Ian Desmond.  Leave the young man alone and let him play you should see  plays he's making now.  They panicked on him earlier in the year, weren't quite sure what he's gonna be like at short it's a matter of when you get to the big leagues the game is faster.  And when you adjust to the speed of the game, you're gonna make plays.

King Ian Desmond = The KID

(Image removed from quote.)

exactly.

the origin of King Ian Desmond came when I realized what a great K.I.D. he was and I was hooked on The Tudors.  I realized King Henry VIII was one of a kind, then I realized we as Nats fans had our own amazing majesty on the court.

Hence, :worship: King Ian Desmond was born.

The guy is a very good player.  Very impressive with his defense of late and he has some pop in that bat.

I am a man of my word and ordered my Ian Desmond jersey shirt based on his RBI against the Mets the other night. Truth is I was going to get one anyway when they started showing up at the stadium.

Nice ... yeah I rocked mine on Sunday and a couple people stopped and said your boy has been a welcome addition.

not to rain on anyone's parade...but while we are exalting Desmond, has anyone actually looked at his line?

.262/.319/.447 is an above average hitting SS.  And he's 24 and playing good defense.  What is there to rain on?

Our three best offensive players all play offensive positions allowing us to stick with better defenders at the defensive positions. the facts of baseball haven't changed, "Power at the corners, defense up the middle." If we could just find an offensive right fielder and a catcher under 100 then we would be good for awhile. Any offensive out of SS, 2nd, C, and CF should be looked at as a bonus. Teams that try and lean on those positions for most of their offensive output seem to not do too well (see Orioles, Baltimore and Pirates, Pittsburgh)

Salamander man - average. not above average. especially with a guzman-esque OBP. and while average is fine for what we need and expect from a rookie, it is not pedestal-worthy as some are suggesting.

he is an average shortstop at the moment. why are we crowning him for the next decade, when we have Espinosa lurking?

Plus he boast the third highest ISO among all SS in the MLB and the 6th highest OPS! Can't complain about that!

I guess JMad forgot about all the crapspackle we've been throwing out at SS for the last 5 years.  Even if we say Desmond is "average" for argument's sake, that's a hell of an improvement for this team.

Correct.

But, he's not average.

He's a great fielder, he hits for power (as can be seen by his ISO, OPS) and according to Fangraphs he's the second best running SS in the game.

Can't ask for much more from your eight hitter.

If he'd bump up his walks from 6.9% to something like 9% and cut his K's from 21.4% to 19% he'd be the complete package.

I bought a $25 jersey shirt. That is far from crowning his ass. It is far from buying a $200+ official jersey.

well, whatever. its cool. Desmonds doing well for a rookie, so that's a positive. I am not saying he has been a bum.

I just think the whole "King Desmond" thing is a little premature for a guy with a line like that.

guzman would be ripped to pieces for those stats.

Top 10 in OPS
Top 10 in wOBA
6th in WAR
2nd in UZR/150 with SS over 200 innings
5.3 VORP

BTW, average NL SS is hitting .265/.324/.375
