Asher.  It doesn't sound ethnic but it was one of the tribes.
Solid.  I have a buddy who named his son Asher.  It means "happy".

Asher.  It doesn't sound ethnic but it was one of the tribes.  Benjamin is another.  Just stick away from Issachar.

Asher as a last name isn't a bad idea.  I'm keeping my first name the same.

Phil Wood took a question today from a caller asking why not move Desmond to the OF.  Wood said he has talked to Nats front office personnel and scouts and they have said they aren't ready to give up on Desmond yet at SS and they still feel he can become a top level player.   He mentioned that if they thought Desmond could hit 20-30 HRs a year then they would consider a move to the OF more strongly.

Ok, so that sets a limit on the expectations of how much power he can develop.

yeah and he's batting .306 in his last 10 games (and he's been excellent since returning from paternity leave).

let's hope he continues it.

Weird stat - Desmond has stolen 10 bases with 12 singles, 5 BB, and 6 2B.  Even treating the doubles as stealing opportunities, he must be stealing at close to 50% of the chances to steal, when you consider there may be guys ahead of him blocking him.  That does not even discount the situations where it would be dumb to run.  For comparison, only Coco, Carlos Gomez, and Will Venable also have OBP < .300 and more than 5 steals. They are all at 8.  Coco comes the closest to Desmond's rate, 8 for 24 (or 25) 1b /BB/ 2B.  Desmond is turning into the King of turning singles and walks into doubles.

solid insight ... seems like he's faster this year.  or just getting better jumps.  or combo of both 8)

Probably better jumps. Maury Wills was nowhere close to the fastest guy in baseball, but he could read a pitcher (and he was quick). We saw Darren Ford get thrown out yesterday. It's not as much pure speed as smarts.

from rosenthal:

Quote
At the request of his friend, Nationals bench coach John McLaren, Larry Bowa — a former major league shortstop, coach and manager — is helping Nats shortstop Ian Desmond with his defense.

Desmond has a tendency to wait on grounders and rely too much on his arm. Bowa suggested a drill in which a coach rolls balls slowly to Desmond, forcing him to charge. He also has spoken with Desmond on the phone.

“Guys have such great arms, they lay back on balls — and this guy has a cannon,” says Bowa, who is now an analyst for MLB Network. “He catches ’em flat-footed. He catches ’em deep. He doesn’t understand the mechanics of coming and getting the ball.

“I told him, ‘As athletic as you are, you can’t think you’re going to make every play. If you backhand a ball in the hole and the guy runs less than 4.0 (seconds) to first, eat it. A double-play situation when the ball is not hit hard, just get one.’”

Desmond, 25, led all major league shortstops with 34 errors last season, and his eight errors this season tie him for the lead with the Rangers’ Elvis Andrus and Cardinals’ Ryan Theriot.

“His mentality is that he wants to turn every double play,” Bowa says. “That’s how you get a lot of errors. I’m not saying he’s not thinking. He’s just being too aggressive on every play.

“He’s a good kid. He’s going to be a good shortstop.”

hopefully this helps him.

It's sad that it takes coaches outside the organization to teach fundamentals. What are the coaches on the team doing all day long?

Having said that, I hope Bowa's advice works out well for Desmond.

i'm sure they just wanted an outside opinion.  seeing how McLaren and Bowa are friends, maybe he thought Bowa would be able to spot something.

Larry Bowa was Joe Torre's third base and infield coach for a very long time, and was one of the best out there. Great baseball mind but failed at managing due to a bit of a temper. Likely is very happy to sit in a studio all day and talk about baseball. I really don't have a problem in bringing in one of the best to help.

Sometimes it takes a voice he doesn't hear every single day to get through to someone.  He's probably TELLING him the same thing or at least something very similar to what McLaren's telling him, other than the new drill

do not mention nap and kid in the same sentence unless your name is Lindbergh.

For some reason I can't stop saying "KING" when Desmond does something totally badass.  It drives my wife crazy since, as you've all pointed, it makes no sense.

He kind of looks like he could be in a mummy movie.
