Ian Desmond Appreciation Thread
« Topic Start: January 12, 2010, 08:43:07 PM »
I've always appreciated things Ian Desmond says - just check out my signature. But his interview with Bill Ladson contains a masterpiece:

Quote
"I feel I'm confident about my abilities to play. I think I bring a lot to a team," Desmond said. "I feel like I play hard and bring passion to the game. I feel like I'm a pretty translucent guy. You get what you see. I pretty much put everything out there. ... I want to be up in the big leagues all year. I think they have something special going on."

 translucent is such a great word to use for that - nonsensical (it means light passes through him) but just close enough to the truth to be amusingly, well, illuminating!

He also uttered the 2010 Washington Nationals Team Motto:

Quote
"I believe in myself now. We are going to move forward from all the negativity in the past,"

And to think he's paid for baseball, not interviews!

Well, word on the other Message Board, is that if they bring Kennedy or Hudson in, Guzman will be SS, and probably Desmond will be back playing in AAA.

I don't like that....I think Desmond deserves the SS position. But the word is that if they bring Kennedy or Hudson in, all bets are off......

And did you notice in Ladson's article, it stated the Nats office has mixed feelings about Desmond - that is not a good sign to me..... 8)

Yeah, Rizzo vs Riggleman. But when they hired Riggs, I think that in a way endorsed Ian.

He sucks.  We need to upgrade our middle infield.

Should posts like this one be in a "Player X Appreciation Thread"?

Is that the best you can muster for "appreciation"?  I'd hate to see it when you're down on a player.

Seems like he'd be great for the clubhouse. I'm pulling for him to make the team.

If Desmond has a good spring, he should deserve to get the job.  If he doesn't, let him go get some more seasoning in the minors.  I have faith in this front office now.

got ya. I will say the same thing if we add some more payroll before the season starts, ideally in the form of an infielder and pitching.

We should have plenty of money to spend.

Quote
It'll be interesting to see how the Nationals finish the winter--do they add another pitcher, or do they get a second baseman like Orlando Hudson or Adam Kennedy? And then there's this winter's round of arbitration hearings; that process begins later this month when teams and players start to exchange salary figures, and it should bump the salaries of Willingham and Brian Bruney. They already have $46.725 million committed for 2010 (plus a $1 million buyout to Austin Kearns), and with arbitration and other contracts for pre-arb players, the dollar figure should push into the mid 50s again. The payroll was around $60 million last year, so it would seem like there's room to add another piece and be right around the 2009 payroll, or add two with a slight bump.

It's a freaking great song anyway.

If they sign Garland and trade for a good 2B - I'll drink a whole bottle of Jack and jump off the Red Porch seats onto the field

But Garland has the whole west coast issue going on...we signed Marquis because he rejected us.

I am hoping for the 2B trade though.

I have to think that's posturing. Is it worth turning down money to avoid 3 months worth of home games in DC? Moving to the NL is always a good idea.

I think Padilla is a pretty good sign, but his personality is a wild card to me.

Damn, I didn't realize just how much payroll the team got out of after '09.

No it has nothing to do with the Lerners (although so far, so good this offseason by the owners).  I have faith in Rizzo and his staff and I believe he, along with Riggleman and his coaches, will come to the right decision.

Yup.  Getting Kearns (thank god), Meat Hook and Nick off the books really clears up some payroll space.  Let's hope we use it and do so wisely.

Hopefully we re-sgn Dunn to an extension for several years.

...and I know this is a dangerous thing to say here, but....I'd like to see Guzman have a great year here....maybe get traded at the break, but....I like Guzzie....
