The nice thing about the Os is they have two huge spenders with competent FOs, and two of the star young GMs in their division- good luck digging out of that hole

I'll give Duke a few years.  My impression is he is not an idiot.  He is a jerk, but he did pretty nicely up in Montreal and he made a number of nice lower budget moves in Boston.  For the most part, his trades worked well (other than Moyer for Darren Bragg).  his bigger spending is where he had a mixed bag.

Darren Bragg... there's a blast from the past!

They also said we need to start grooming a manager to replace Davey, whether it's someone established like Francona or an unknown up and comer.  Said it's crucial we get someone that can earn the respect of Stras/Harper and get the most out of their potential.

Every big time manager in MLB will be killing himself to get the Nats job after Davey. Who wouldn't want to manage all that young talent? We will have our pick of whoever is available.

It will be a tough to give the job to a first time manager.

Again on ESPN Insider, JimBo released his offseason report cards for us.

I'd give us a C+, I suppose. On offense, D is for DeRosa, but the pitching upgrades make our offseason somewhat not stupid. If they announce that Jayson Werth has undergone hypnotherapy and remembers how to be good, then it's a B.

I can think of three major moves this offseason. 1. trading for Gio, 2. extending Gio, 3. signing Jackson. 1 and 2 depend on if fangraphs or rizzo is correct about Gio, but even if Rizzo is right, the glaring weaknesses of the team (cf and lead off- equate them if you so choose) hasn't been addressed. Then again, Rizzo gets credit for not trading away everything to get an Upton. As far as Jackson goes, best case, he's part of a playoff run, or we flip him for prospects, or we get draft picks, worst case he sucks- it's a relatively low upside, very low downside move. I'd say Rizzo gets a C if he's right about gio and a D if fangraphs is right (falling to an f if peackock manages better numbers than gio this year)

He gave us a B+, 4th highest grade in the NL.  Said with the addition of Gio & the (undervalued) signing of EJax, we put together a rotation that will allow us to complete.  Also touched on that a young rotation lead by Stras/Zimmnn/Gio will allow us to compete for the next 5 years.

Only teams ahead of us were the Marlins who got an A+, Reds A-, DBacks A-.  Phillies got a B, and the Braves(D+) and Mets(D) were dead last in the NL.

To be fair what he is saying isn't crazy.  Our team has a lot of young talent and a LOT to build on.

Who cares what the media thinks?  People willing to put their money on the line like the Nats:

Quote
The LVH SuperBook on Sunday became the first Vegas sportsbook to release MLB win totals, and no team drew more immediate action than the Nationals.

Washington opened at 82.5 wins and was quickly bet up to 84.5.

“People really like this team,” assistant book manager Chris Bennett said, noting some analysts are picking the Nationals to win the wild card. “The No. 1 reason is Stephen Strasburg. Then they added Gio Gonzalez, Edwin Jackson, they’ve got Jordan Zimmermann. Their starting pitching looks by far the best it’s ever been.

“It’s a tough division, but this is clearly the best Nationals team they’ve ever had.”

Bettors also pounced on the Twins under, dropping their total from 75 to 73.

Atlantis casino in Reno was first up with MLB win totals for the sixth straight year. Earlier Sunday, BetOnline became the first offshore book to release them.

BetOnline opened Washington at 81 (-120 under) and remained there -- 3.5 wins lower than LVH – Sunday night.

There were other big differences, too.

LVH opened the Phillies at 92.5 and moved them to 93. BetOnline had the Phillies at 95.5. LVH pegged the Angels at 92.5, three wins higher than BetOnline. And LVH listed the Red Sox at 89.5, two wins higher than BetOnline.

LVH offers -110 on its totals and is taking maximum bets of $1,000.

MLB season win totals from LVH SuperBook

Arizona Diamondbacks: 86
Atlanta Braves: 87.5, moved to 87
Baltimore Orioles: 69.5
Boston Red Sox: 89.5
Chicago Cubs: 74.5
Chicago White Sox: 74
Cincinnati Reds: 86.5
Cleveland Indians: 86.5
Colorado Rockies: 82, moved to 81

Florida Marlins: 84.5
Houston Astros: 64.5, moved to 64
Kansas City Royals 80.5
Los Angeles Angels: 92.5
Los Angeles Dodgers: 81
Milwaukee Brewers: 83.5

I like the Arizona under, Baltimore under, Cleveland under, Detroit under, KC under, Angels under, Brewers over, Phillies under (at 93), and Toronto over.

With the Nats, I'd take the over at 82 and under at 85.

I think Arizona is over 86. They might just surprise people with an even better year than last.

You have this wrong. It's blowing rainbows and riding unicorns. Or something like that. 8)

And the Nats still have the highest rated farm system in MLB and two of the hottest young talents in Stras and Harp. Reality. Not a fantasy.

I'm going to go with Baseball America's take on this over yours but I'm sure you'll say they don't know what they're talking about.

Yes, this was before the Gio trade but giving up four prospects is not that big a deal in the whole scheme of things.

Of course, that list came out before the trade for Gio, and BA has gone on record as saying the Nats no longer have the best farm system, but of course, in your infinite wisdom, I'm sure you took the time to look that up before you made yourself look uninformed by posting that.

Right?

Gosh darn it, nobody should use the words "reality" or "fantasy" until I have completely purged all my memories of William Shatner's cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody."

So please do educate us all. Where is the link to the new ranking? I will just have to live with the shame of not being informed with the latest ranking. It's worth it just to soak up your wisdom.

Here's some random blogger's take on the effect of the Gio trade on the farm. Fair enough. The ranking took a big hit, more than I would have anticipated. But it's likely to go up. See below.

http://www.thenatsblog.com/2012-articles/january/nats-farm-system-ranked-no-1-by-baseball-americabefore-gio-gonzalez-trade.html

Perhaps even more impressive, is how strong their system still is despite the Gonzalez trade. John Sickles, one of the internet's aficionados on MLB prospects,  put out his organization rankings this week as reflected after the trade. The Nationals still ranked in the top half in his rankings, coming in at No. 14 overall. That ranking could potentially go up very quickly as well when you think about the massive talent pool the team brought in in their most recent draft. It is likely that the prospect status of pitchers like Alex Meyer and Matt Purke will rise quickly after a year of production in the minor leagues.

Not only are you uniformed, you can't admit you're wrong.

Yes. No. 1 in Handbook, will slip a little in final rankings. @nickkappel: Does Gio Gonzalez trade bump #Nationals from top system ranking?

14th?  Only half of baseball away from being "the best?"  On the plus side their organization ranking to payroll ranking is still a robust +8
