I did and to make up for it, they sent me a dozen Joel Hanrahan autographed balls. Now I am pissed as ever.

Well, at least you get the lineups before anyone else now.  That way, you can plan your evening around whether or not to watch the game.  I mean, I get an e-mail that says Ronnie Belliard is hitting second that gives me enough time to make the six-hour drive to Washington, march up to Stan's office and chuck 12 Joel Hanrahan autographed baseballs at him.

It would be cool if J.D.'s number was #7. Then we could call him "Old No. 7."

Q: And Austin Kearns? Any chance he joins Tavarez on the DFA line?

Probably not. Every indication I get from the organization suggests that Kearns has a chance to stick around -- even though his bat contributes almost nothing. Last year, right after the trading deadline passed, the Nats immediately cut ties with two overpaid veterans, Felipe Lopez and Paul Lo Duca. But on Sunday, when acting GM Mike Rizzo was asked about Kearns (and bluntly, why on Earth the team would consider keeping him), Rizzo said there was a "180-degree difference" between Lopez/Lo Duca and Kearns. Rizzo's defense of Kearns was fairly passionate, and I've learned in dealing with him this year that he doesn't fake that kind of stuff. Anyway, here's what he said: "Austin Kearns gives you above-average right field, one of the feared throwing arms in baseball, and he's a hell of a guy in the clubhouse. He makes a number of players better, he's an upbeat guy. And yeah, he's struggling, he's struggling mightily with the bat, but this is a guy of high character and a really good teammate."
wow, Rizzo has lost it. It would be one thing if Kearns was making league minimum but he is making $8 Million to sit on the bench and bat .199 with no power.

Now that I have a dumbed down DirecTV package, this is one game I won't be able to watch since it's in market and I'll get blacked out.     :?

Yeah but armed with that knowledge, it's hard to characterize the Lerners as "cheap."     :?

That better as hell just be GM talk to "up" his "value."  If Rizzo really believes that and Kearns sticks around, I will absolutely join you in the "Rizzo is a freaking moron" fanclub.

For now I'm just going to cross my fingers and hope he's blowing smoke, but I'll be keeping the pitchfork handy.

If the Nats want him back it'll cost them $10 mil. It's in his contract.

they will decline that option but they will probably still bring him back on a cheap deal because he is a good clubhouse guy and Rizzo likes those.

wow, what a freaking joke. He has a $1 Million buyout if we decline the option. :bang:

Some quotes from the day they gave Kearns that extension back in '07:

Quote
"I got to see how close this is to getting it to where they want it to go," Kearns said at an afternoon news conference at the downtown offices of the Lerner family, which owns the Nationals. "I really do think it's closer than what people expect because I think there's a lot of pieces of the puzzle that are already here on the field, and pieces that are here off the field. It excited me."

Quote
"I don't like a player going on the market," Bowden said. "I don't like a player going into his last year of a contract. I like assets."

Quote
"When I was on the other side, I feared him (Kearns)," Acta said by phone. "For us to have a guy in the middle of the order who's happy, that's a great move."

Quote
But both Kasten and General Manager Jim Bowden believe Kearns -- a .265 career hitter who established career highs with 24 homers and 86 RBI in 2006 -- has the potential to be one of the club's cornerstones. They said the move shows the team is committed to spending on the right deals.

Thanks Jimbo.

Maybe the buyout is a good thing. Kearns will want a chance to play in the Majors and that Nats can't play him for the first 6 weeks.

I'd be willing to bet most of Kearns at bats were before he went crazy and we had to put him in a home.
