You haven't heard the high quality gas/propane ones that run in a nicely engineered enclosure at 1800 RPMs. They are almost soothing. :)

I just can't pull the trigger for a once a year (at most) event. Almost, but not quite.

Most of the generators I've heard are so loud that going without power would be preferable to having to subject one's eardrums to that assault.

If they are so quiet, how could I hear them?

I have a couple of neighbors with the loud types, it only takes 1 to drive you back inside with the windows closed.  Not referring to this storm of course, cause we're all inside with the windows closed anyway.

I feel like my entire neighborhood is out walking their dogs now (though we were pretty lucky as far as wind is concerned)

Metro will open at 2 on a Sunday Schedule.

Didn't click the link, but it's being reported that they will charge the usual rush-hour fares this afternoon despite the reduced service, this because allegedly the software doesn't allow changing the fares on such short notice.

Took a walk outside just now (Columbia Pike) - everything pretty much normal, no real evidence of last night except a few small branches and lots of leaves in the streets/walks; just a touch of rain.

Made it through last night without a power cut (guess I paid my dues for the year with 17 no-electricity hours following the derecho) or a window put through by a gust of wind, so everything's OK at this end.

So far so good here. We had lights flicker a few times, but nothing else. The big house was w/o power just before 10pm. Guess it's good that we have a huge diesel generator. You'd love it Chief

Had to bite the bullet and admit that driving out to Gaithersburg to take my dog to the vet is not wise. We had to make an appointment with a vet in the city.

I despise my gasoline powered generator. It's complicated. Sort of a love/hate thing.

If they are so quiet, how could I hear them?

Is it quiet? No, definitely not. But I sleep literally a foot away from the generator. Its on the outside wall opposite my bedroom and bed. I woke up and didn't even know if it was still running, it was. Definitely not as loud as a lot of the hand crank gas generator people are used to. And since I still don't have power back, worth every decibel of noise.

These natural gas generators are just great. Low noise, comes on automatically seconds after you lose power. Hooked up to the gas line, infinite fuel, plugs into the circuit breaker and runs the entire house. In August I had every TV on, the AC, lights... never overloaded it. It's definitely paid for itself this year, third multiple day power loss with two months still to go.

Hope everyone made it through alright.  Up in the Jerz we got harsh harsh winds (inland up near Trenton) and record high tides with flooding.  The Jersey Shore no longer exists I'm pretty sure.  For all of those who will make a lame joke right now, it's really a shame.  I have been vacationing there since I was a little kid (not Sleazeside though) and all of the things that I grew up loving down there are pretty much destroyed or washed out to sea.

My condolences to all of those who are effected by this terrible storm.  I lucked out and didn't lose power, internet, phone or any property damage.  I consider myself and the family heavily blessed by these facts as many friends of mine have at the very least lost power or have some damage.  I know folks in South Jersey who also lost quite a bit.

Anything I can do to help anybody out on here, please let me know.  My thoughts and prayers are with you all!

I do hate it less in cooler weather when I can have the windows shut. It does keep the refrigerator cold, run the boiler, run the well pump, and run the TV/cable/internet equipment.

If I had city water and a gas stove, I'd buy one of those wonderful, quiet little Honda EU generators to power the refrigerator and call that good.
