Looks like winter will go out with a bang; models are shaping up for a massive rain/wind/snow storm hitting the east coast on 12/26 and continuing into 12/27.  However, there's no consensus on what area gets what kind of precipitation.   Still, if you have travel plans for those days, keep your eye on the forecasts.

here's the latest GFS:

Sumnag, that flashing that Sandy freaked up will need some love before we get snow.  Anyone ever try that rubber spray that gets advertised on low-rent daytime trash TV?

Darn it.  I drive north for a week and a half and have to park outside.

this trip is usually a nag, but I do it to drive my Dad up to my brother's for Christmas (I'd prefer chinese or deli and a movie).  I've had my windshield spray freeze up at night in sleet on the mass pike at the end of the trip.  My car does not like being outside in the cold.  Absolute worse time of the year to be committed to going to metro boston.

and here we go...

weatherboy weather:

Quote
A vigorous storm system will push into the northeast this Friday, bringing bad weather to portions hit hard by Hurricane Sandy ...and setting the stage for interesting weather during Christmas week. A low pressure system will move well west from the ocean, bringing milder air and moderate to heavy rainfall into the Mid Atlantic and Northeast on Friday. Along the coast, around eastern New Jersey and especially southern Long Island, winds and rains could be especially strong/heavy. Precipitation will gradually come to an end late at night as cold air rushes in on the backside of the system. Some snow showers are possible throughout this area late Friday and Saturday as cold, breezy conditions arrive. The exact track and intensity of this storm system will help set-up the stage for next week's main action. While a somewhat weak system may bring light snow to portions of the northern Mid Atlantic area on Christmas Eve/Day, a more significant/substantial storm looks to impact the region just after Christmas. How things evolve after Friday's storm will help determine weather the Mid Atlantic and Northeast sees heavy snow, rain, or ice during the middle part of next week.

The GFS is currently showing a significant ice event for D.C./Va, with snow from Baltimore north, but it is still "way" to early to have any faith.

f'this.  F'this big time.  3 f'ng storms in a week and half for me to drive through.  Spamtrack and the midnight express are looking even better.

i'll drive up Saturday 12/22, if there is still a world, and I could probably come back 12/30 or 12/31 to beat the last storm.

high wind warnings kick in Saturday, though winds will start ramping up tonight.  It's going to be a wild ride over the next week and a half.

Gonna be nasty down in Charleston SC next week too, some days barely making it to the upper 60's.  I hate having to wear a sweater while drinking outside at Red's.

wxrisk says chances are increasing for a big ice storm on the 26-27th in the D.C./Va area.  He's usually pretty accurate and absolutely nailed sandy days before anyone else.

It's actually located on Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant, just across the Cooper River Bridge from Charleston.  Between Reds and Poe's (on Sullivan's Island), I never seem to make it to downtown Charleston itself.

we visited the H.L. Hunley restoration site/museum when were in the area.  The curator gave my kids quarters that had the back seal etched off and replaced with a confederate flag.  I S you not.

Last time down there my son and I bicycled to Poe's from Mount Pleasant.  Got a lift back however, not safe to drink and cycle.  They even had a Dogfish Head on tap among their other selections like "Palmetto Ale".

Isn't defacing currency illegal?  I guess the rest stops on the NJ Turnpike all have those penny crushers...but that's not quite the same..

if you don't believe in the legitimacy of the federal government, then it's no big deal to deface the currency. :)
