I'm not sure if Qatar's a good idea or not, there are a lot of things that would give me pause in putting it there, but this presentation is quite impressive, I must say.

i had a professor once say "a bad design with a good presentation is doomed eventually. a good design with a bad presentation is doomed immediately". i dont know how rooted in reality this qatar proposal is.

I've never seen "just 30 minutes from Bahrain" as a selling point before.

Both decisions (2018 and 2022) were idiotic.  I love the WC, but FIFA makes MLB look good.  Or Cosa Nostra for that matter.

Liverpool are planning to sign American midfielder Clint Dempsey (27) from Fulham for around £10 m. in January.

Dempsey is a beast.  Donovan might be the captain of the USMNT, but Dempsey brings the grit and hustle.

What I love about Dempsey is that he thinks differently than other US players.  He seems to think he can do things that come natural to other successful players.  The sliding / diving to get on the end of a cross, the dribbling tricks, etc...  Donovan may be more skillful and athletic, but he seems a bit more timid, at least earlier in his career.  Am I wrong?

I recall Dempsey pulling a move that I think C. Blanco used to pull - holding the ball between his ankles and jumping through a pair of defenders on the sideline.  You just don't see that kind of a street play out of the typical US player.

Totally agree.  I think he grew up in a trailer park in Texas playing with a lot of Mexican kids, so his style is probably a reflection of that.

i think he is also an aspiring rapper

during the world cup, my coworker was telling me he had a sister who was really good at tennis. he gave up soccer so the family could pay/travel for his sister's tennis. then she died (of cancer?) and he resumed soccer

think you are right on both counts.  i hope his body stays intact for 2014.

i'd really like to see what US soccer looks like in 4 or 8 years. i think i remember looking at the rosters and some of our stars might be past their prime by the next world cup. then there are some younger guys who will be closer to their prime (altidore, bradley). i wonder what current 18 year olds will fill the voids left by dempsey and donovan. there has gotta be a couple good ones, right?

The under-17 team is very good. One or two of those kids should be on the next World Cup roster.

the only young player i know is Najar, because of his visibility in MLS. he could play for either honduras or US. how does he rank in the grand scheme of 17 year olds?  is playing in the MLS the best a 17 year old from the US can do or is there a stash of them training/playing in europe somewhere

I know Alejandro Guido (midfielder) is supposed to be a future star. I forget the striker's name who was whooping for the Under-17 team, but he's supposed to be good, too.

At least a couple of them train in Europe, but a lot of them are on MLS junior teams.

Michigan's freshman striker, Soony Saad, is expected to be a future star for the US team, too. Michigan is playing Akron right now on ESPN 2.

Watching the Chelsea-Tottenham game. So much talent on these teams. I hope they draw so City can stay in second.

Bale is the crap.

Champions League, Round of 16:

AC Milan - Tottenham Hotspur

Valencia - Schalke 04

AS Roma - Shakhtar Donetsk

Arsenal - Barcelona

OL - Real Madrid

FC Copenhagen - Chelsea

Inter Milan - Bayern Munich

OM - Manchester United

So many good matchups. Chelsea got lucky.

Watched that game in a pub with a pint of Guinness in hand. It ended up being pretty dull. Definitely a letdown... the game that is.

just read the press release. sounds like a rejection letter. it was just missing the last sentence that says "We regret to inform you we are moving in a different direction". i have no idea how this is going to play out. i dont know what municipality has the funds to pay for a stadium right now and how they could possibly sell it politcally. if only the nationals and their stadium were a success story...

maybe vince gray can somehow spin a soccer stadium into his "one city" theme

I really liked this line "We’re not surprised at the finding that our stadium will drive tens of millions of dollars in new spending each year, attract hundreds of thousands of fans annually, help create hundreds of new jobs and generate millions of dollars of new State and Local tax revenues."

Its like "HEY DC, DONT YOU WANT A PIECE OF THIS?"
