The same can be said in reverse, of course.

An aging Werth, aging Morse, Desmond unable to duplicate a massive career year. Espinosa continues to do his thing and a possible Harper sophomore slump.

LaRoche wouldn't save the team from that, but the insurance his bat would provide would help.

My only worry is starter health- I'm not sure that's sustainable,  even throwing stras's shut down into the health category,  that's only a handful of starts missed by the whole rotation over the course of a season

Right - it's too early to know if letting LaRoche - who may maintain, improve, or regress - will make the team better or worse.  LaRoche is older and coming off a career year.  Moore should be trending upwards given his age and the effect of added experience.  It's too early to know which one will improve the team more next year.

You're kind of reaching with the Harper thing there.  Sure, it's possible, but many things with remote likelihood are also possible.

It would be interesting to see what BP projects for each of the members of our current lineup vs. 2012, this would be a reasonable starting point for this sort of assessment.

My worry, also. All the starters were healthy all 2012: Strassburg through Lannan.

I don't know how far fetched it is. Heyward struggled badly his second season. Not an exact comparison, but any talent can struggle for any number of reasons.

Especially if Harper is our only left handed bat. Someone pointed out he might not see as many quality pitches if RHPs are pitching around him often to face RHBs instead.

I think that logic works in the abstract, but if you look at the splits for the guys around Harper in the lineup, Zimmerman and Morse are both still good against RHP and if you look at desmond's last year (assuming it was his real level and not a career year), he was hitting .281/.336/.462 against right handed starters

Good points. Another counter point is that pitchers were already extremely careful against him this past year.

Zimmerman is .280/.341/.471 against RH starters for his career, Morse is .285/.341/.478. Minuscule sample (51 PA, 48 AB), but even Moore was .250/.294/.583 last year against righty starters. Would I like another lefty in the line up yes if they fit into the team, but I don't want Rizzo to try to cram in another lefty just for the sake of having another left handed batter

I don't know why people care so much about this. It's more important to split up lefties than it is to split up righties.

2012 LHB vs. LHP: .232/.294/.353 (.648, 72 points below league average)
2012 RHB vs. RHP: .251/.308/.396 (.704, 20 points below league average)

So I'd like to have LaRoche back because LaRoche seems pretty good, but let's not make this the same problem a team would face with 3 consecutive Ryan Howards in the middle of the lineup.

Madson looking like he's going to the Angels. Unsurprising.

Supposedly the Red Sox are open to dealing Andrew Bailey.

Take it for what it's worth, but grantland just did an mlb trade value ranking of the top 50 assets in the game.
Desmond was 40, Gio 11, Strasburg 8, and Harper tied for 1. I don't necessarily agree with the rankings, but it's nice to Nationals players getting some recognition

That was a fun read.  Jordan Zimmermann should have been on there as well - at least in the honorable mention part where they mention a bunch of young pitchers like Latos and Holland.

The Royals are trying too hard to trade away wil meyers.  I bet Rizzo would gladly take him off their hands.

It would probably take Det.

(I think I would do it.) :az: for Myers

Huh, we're not trading a starter for a prospect.

Won't happen.  Dodgers are going to give him stupid stupid money.

Honestly the "bidding war" with Greinke will only hurt the Nats trying to re-sign their own young talent[.  Strasburg is going to cost epic dollars if Greinke even comes close to the CC contract.

I'd be very leery if the Royals are actively trying to trade Wil Myers. If they are willing to trade him, it may be that they see something that makes him a AAAA player.

I don't think he is a AAAA player, he really has shown that he is a beast.  He probably will give the Royals the best return on young pitching which is what they need desperately.  They also have a good farm system so they may be willing to trade a talent like Myers to obtain a front of the rotation starter which they don't have in the system.

Why would the Nats even want Myers?  He is an OFer and unless the long term plan is Harper in CF and Goodwin is traded, it doesn't make sense to trade for Myers.

"I'd deal Det for Meyers."

Me too.  But there's no way KC makes that deal.  I like Det, and he definitely has upside, but KC wants a much more accomplished, front of the rotation type guy in exchange for Myers.

If we're trading the back end of our rotation for outfield prospects, maybe we should just deal Lannan for Trout.

I'm not saying they would, just that I would.  Also Myers>Goodwin and you make room for good players.

You're being a troll comparing detwiler to lannan.  KC has reportedly talked to Boston about a myers for lester swap.  Lester has 2 years of team control left as opposed to detwiler's 3, is way more expensive, and is coming off the worst season of his career.

If they would listen to lester for myers then they would probably listen to detwiler for myers.
