Nationals Avoid Arbitration With Drew Storen

By Zach Links [January 17 at 7:23pm CST]

The Nationals have avoided arbitration with Drew Storen by reaching agreement on a one-year, $2.5MM contract, according to his representatives at CAA Sports (on Twitter).  The contract also includes $1MM in performance bonuses.

Storen, 25, was eligible for arbitration for the first time this winter thanks to his Super Two status.  The former tenth-overall pick of the 2009 draft posted a 2.37 ERA with 7.1 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 in 37 appearances last season.  The newly-acquired Rafael Soriano will close for the Nats in 2013 but GM Mike Rizzo made it known today that he is still confident in Storen's abilities.

Swartz projected that Storen would earn $1.7MM through the arbitration process.  The reliever will be eligible for free agency after the 2016 season.

The Nationals have six remaining unsigned arbitration eligible players: Roger Bernadina, Tyler Clippard, Ian Desmond, Ross Detwiler, Craig Stammen, and Jordan Zimmermann.  They're currently regarded as a file and trial team by case, and past history shows the team is certainly willing to go to a hearing.

Don't know what to make of that, other than a multi year deal not in the offing.

I'm betting there was no urgency to get JZ done today bc both sides are anticipating a multi-year deal being signed before the Feb 4th arb hearing.  That's what I'm hoping anyway!

So - what does this mean?  The Nats are cheap?  Or incompetent?

It's a safe bet that both sides are working on a long-term deal, and that today's filing of dueling numbers was done merely so the deadline wouldn't be missed by either side.  As you pointed out, the two parties aren't very far apart at all, and they have certainly mentioned these numbers to one another over the past few weeks.  Since it would be insane for the Nats to go to arbitration over $800,000 (this isn't the Ryan Howard arb case, after all), it seems extremely likely that this was a mere placeholder: they're either going to work out a multi-year deal or, if they can't reach agreement, reach a deal for next season that splits the difference between the two numbers.

If we sign Zimmermann for a contract through 2016, this is an A+ offseason.

I think you are right.  They may intentionally low ball him to try and get him to sign a team friendly extension.

It's 1.2 Million actually, but yeah, relatively chump change.

Anyone team low billing arbitration is not thinking- arbitrators can't split the difference, so you just make the player more like to win

Right. There is no low balling. If anything, agents go higher because there's nothing to lose. Boo hoo,  you "settle"for 4.6M. Teams absolutely haggle over 800k. That's actually signifiant. They've gone to arb over a lot less. This is all market analysis, and teams don't hold the line for one player but for the compounding impact on every subsequent deal. It's the way they control costs.

So they can still go to arbitration and still negotiate a long time deal?   Then what good is a deadline?

There's an arbitration hearing date in a few weeks. Up until the hearing starts, they can still reach an agreement. Even after the hearing, they could still put together a long term deal, it would just reflect the 1 year deal in there as well.

There is no deadline on working out a long term deal. The deadline for working out next year's salary is the announcement of the arbitration results when the decision will have been made for them.

It's 1.2 million as Tenken pointed out. Other than that error I believe that is the case  and we will see a long term deal.
