If Guzman was healthy, this line up would be deadly!

As is, I think we can knock Kawakami around tonight!

Martis 7 ip, 5 h, 2 er, 2 bb, 4 k

(i was dead on last time around)

You should have tested your luck and called for a no-hitter that the Nats somehow lose.

We're getting a very robust thunderstorm right now in the center of Fairfax County, and typically these storms move due east, towards Nats Park.  However, the sky is lighter to the west, indicating it shouldn't last long.

It's cloundy and windy here in College Park (seems like it'll rain any minute), but the skies on the horizon are lighter.

It looks like a storm cell is headed right for D.C.  I bet this game gets delayed an hour or so...

Just some trends with Martis to consider based on his limited amount of innings this year:

-  He is throwing pitches like so:  Fastball (42%), Changeup (23%), Slider (18%), Curveball (13%).  He has decreased the number of fastballs from last year and has increased the amount of sliders by 9% and Changeup/Curveball by 3%.  These numbers could draw closer to last year's with more innings, though.

-  His first pitch strikes are up to 67.5%, last year he was throwing first pitch strikes 50% of the time.

-  Last game, he was averaging 90.3 MPH on his four seamer and had it top out at 93.2 MPH.  The fastball also had some good break on it, about 9 inches vertical/6 inches horizontal, he will have another good outing if he can do the same tonight.

-  He did not have any innings with more than 20 pitches and had two innings with just 8 pitches.

Do you have any average speed numbers for his change up & breaking balls?

Change up hovered around 82 MPH, Slider ~80 MPH, and Curve around 77.5 MPH.  Every pitch was about an additional MPH faster than his first start against Atlanta.

That isn't much separation between the fastball and change up.

I think it's more like 12-15 mph and his change up is supposed to be his best/out pitch

No, it appears to be about 8-11.  90-93 minus 82.

What makes the change up work is the speed differential. When it's too close (under 10 mph difference) it's just a BP fastball.

I looked at the plots for the Change up and there might have been a few two seamers that Martis let get away that registered at 87-88 MPH (registered on gameday as change ups).  Since it is still early in the season, they could have skewed the average a bit, but still judging from the individual plots, we are looking at a change up that sits 80-82 MPH and a four seamer that sits 90-93.

From Pete at MASN:

Quote
As another storm roll over Nationals Park, tonight's game will not start on time. The tarp is on the field, but the grounds crew is getting ready to take it off and get the field ready. No official word on a start time.

There are a few injury updates to pass along.

Shortstop Cristian Guzman, who has been sidelined with a left hamstring strain since the 17th, will head to Florida tomorrow for extended Spring Training to get some at bats.

Guzman is eligible to come off the DL on the 29th and is expected to join the Nationals in Philadelphia next week.

Infielder Willie Harris left for Triple-A Syracuse today to being his rehab assignment. Harris has been on the disabled list since the 13th with a left oblique pull.

If everything goes well, he is expected to join the Nationals in Philadelphia next week as well.

First baseman Dmitri Young played five innings in an extended Spring Training game yesterday and took himself out.

Young was placed on the 15-day DL on April 2nd, retroactive to April 1st, with hip and back strains.

Acting GM Mike Rizzo wasn't sure why Young took himself out of the game, but the report he received was he didn't feel well.
