Wow.  I didn't realize until I saw this just how bad the Cubs suck.  They're actually 2 1/2 games WORSE than us and they just traded away their best starter and their 1B and their manager retired yesterday.

They're 5-16 in August and headed downward.  If not for the 10 game lead they have on the Pirates they'd probably end up the worst team in the NL.

Imagine how bad they'd be if it wasn't for their $140M payroll.

Piniella is awful. He can just quit on a team just because they are doing bad? That's shameful.

And not taking care of his family when they need him isn't?

For those going tonight: Yahoo! Weather has 'Chance of an isolated thunderstorm early, then variable clouds overnight with more showers at times. Low 66F. Winds N at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 40%.' Capital Weather Gang has 30% chance of rain with 'The rain is not a definite, but a shower or two is certainly possible during the game. Don't think it will be enough to cause more than a brief delay, but come prepped with rain gear.'

Would he be retiring right now if the Cubs were still in the playoff race?

Wow the Cubs are bad. It would be embarrassing for the Nats not to sweep this series.

IDK.  Sometimes timing's everything.  That wasn't a choice he had to make.  Does it look bad?  Yeah, a bit, but it would look even worse if he didn't take care of his ailing mother.

You're judging him on a non event. The fact that the Cubs aren't within sniffing distance of the playoffs makes the argument invalid.

There's a rumor out there that his mother may not live to see the end of the regualr season.  Then where would Lou be?

His mother's in bad shape.   Some things are more important than being in or out of a pennant race.   Something tells me 882 that you never had to make that choice.

Thanks TT for the insight.   I'm hoping he takes a little lighter look then.   Sorry 882.

terpster was talking tongue-in-cheek.  A while back SF said he paid his dues because he flipped burgers for a summer or something like that...

Oh well, I shouldn't have been so judgemental anyway.   I just feel if you've ever been in that situation then you wouldn't be so quick to criticize.   Flippin' burgers is kind of like being in the infantry ain't it?    :)

Just thinking the same thing.   Lots of empty seats.    If I was at work, I may have wandered over to the yard but I'm off for two weeks.    Ridin' and such ...

Not going to get the average Cub fan since they are struggling, Strasburg bad news hurts, and fan favorite Nieves on the pine.

Fan favorite Nieves should do everyone a favor and become a greeter for people entering the ballpark.

It's a win-win. Nieves gets to keep a salary, the Nats get to call up a better player.
