Bill Ladson after saturdays game said he wasn't excited because of how bad the bullpen was last season and Capps was in his belief the sole reason it got better. I don't agree with this line of thinking but I can explain it.

He was in Baseball America's 26-50 range at midseason. I would imagine that he and Derek Norris will be our #2 and #3 prospects at the end of the season, in either order probably depending on whether the particular scouting service values proximity to the majors (Ramos) or ceiling (Norris) higher.

Depending on which draft picks we sign, I'd put him behind:

Bryce Harper, Derek Norris and Danny Espinosa so he's atleast a top 5 prospects in our system depending on peoples oppinion on Norris and Espinosa he could be top 2.

It will be interesting to see if Baseball America counts Maya as a "prospect"

when he's under contract, but hasn't debuted in the majors yet, how else would they class him?

Wouldn't they treat him the same way they treated Alexi Ramirez? (Not that I know how that was)

A flaw in this thinking is that the bullpen was improved prior to Storen being called up. Certainly Capps is a loss, but it is mitgated by the addition of Storen. Clippard's performance early was also a reason for the improvement. He was actually living on borrowed time, but he is not as bad as the dreadful stretch he had recently. He should at least be able to maintain a level of consistency that makes him a decent contributor even if not dominant. The bullpen overall is still a net improvement over last season. The best way to continue to improve it is to improve the starting rotation and continue to work on defense. You can find other bullpen arms more easily than a top young catching prospect.

The most important thing is that it's really, REALLY stupid to care about the bullpen on a losing team. Most relievers are great one year or for a couple of years, then they suck for a few years, then maybe they get it back, or not.

Totally random.

Now that doesn't mean you don't continually draft and develop pitchers so that you have a wealth of young pitchers to restock your pen with. And I think Rizzo is showing, both through who he targets in trades and who he drafts, that he's committed to having a ton of young pitchers around to choose from.

But the value of Matt Capps is completely zilch to our team. He's doing well this year, but our team sucks. Even if our team is better next year, he could easily suck (just like he did LAST year).

So you never keep relievers on a crappy team, instead of trading them for prospects, because you hope that they will still be good when your team improves. The odds are not with that bet.

I think he isn't eligible because they play winter ball in Venezuela.

I'm assuming so. I think the biggest call will be whether they send down Bryce Harper (every team can designate one single-A player). If they do, they'd have to promote Derek Norris before the cutoff date in order to send him as well.

I would expect Marrero, Espinosa, Norris, Ramos, and Harper to be among the hitters considered.

Pitchers are tougher. Maybe Brad Peacock (if he finishes the season strong), Tom Milone, Brad Meyers?

Slim pickings in our double and triple-A pitching pools.

Wilson Ramos cannot participate in the AFL.

Eligibility Rules

The eligibility rules to play in the AFL are simple.

The roster size is 30 players per team.

Each Major League organization is required to provide six players subject to the following requirements:

    * All Triple-A and Double-A players are eligible, provided the players are on at least a Double-A level roster no later than Aug. 1.
    * One player below the Double-A level is allowed per Major League team.
    * One foreign player is allowed, as long as the player does not reside in a country that participates in winter ball, as part of the Caribbean Confederation or the Australian winter  league.
    * No players with more than one year of credited Major League service as of August 31 are eligible, except a team may select one player picked in the most recently concluded Major League Rule 5 Draft.
    * To be eligible, players on Minor League disabled lists must be activated at least 45 days before the conclusion of their respective seasons.

Ahh, so the deadline has already passed for Norris to be promoted, huh? I wonder if they'll let Harper go (since he won't be playing anywhere else this year and I'm sure they'd love to show him off) or Norris?
