If you can't see Kimbrel is far better I don't know what you are watching.

As the closer Tyler Clippard has blown 2 saves, the same number as Craig Kimbrel.  Even if that weren't the case the point is that relievers have so little impact on a 9 inning game that to call any reliever a HUGE advantage is mathematically ludicrous.  Mariano Rivera at his best was never a HUGE advantage for the Yankees.  He was always an advantage but because he only participated in one inning out of the nine inning game he was a marginal one.

Closers are the most overrated players in baseball IMO.

Agreed.  In fact the math shows that teams that went closer by committee achieved roughly 2% less of a success rate for saves than Mariano Rivera achieved with the Yankees.  Statistically, closers just don't have that much of an impact on the game or even differ from each other that much.  Like much else in baseball their success is greatly influenced by general randomness.

I think the 1970's-80's position of fireman was much more effective. I think bullpen roles are too defined these days.

I don't think this was a bad loss.  I think this was JJ on the top of his game and that's just a tough situation to win a game in.  Sometimes an ace can take over a game and that happened tonight.  Brush it off and on to the next.

Not acceptable.  The offense has to knock him off "the top of his game"  He's nowhere near the pitcher he used to be and he was atrocious FIVE DAYS AGO!

I'll bet he'll be atrocious five days from now too because that's who he is.

He did consistently get those ball six (or more) inches off the plate called as strikes.  That helped.

When Desmond comes back, I'd like to see Lombo stay at second and Danny move to the bench.

I predict Espinosa will win back and lose again the hypothetical September second base job twice over the next month.

Comparative dates on which the Nationals notched their 63rd win, each season (I know this really belongs in the Game 1 thread but it's locked - I don't have mobile internet so couldn't post this from the ballpark):

2012 - 3rd August (105th match of season)
2005 - 15th August (118th match)
2011 - 30th August (133rd match)
2007 - 5th September (140th match)
2006 - 12th September (145th match)
2010 - 21st September (151st match)
---
2008 - finished 59-102
2009 - finished 59-103

---

THIS DAY WITH THE '05 OVERACHIEVERS: Wednesday 3rd August 2005 the Nats won the second match of their home series with the Dodgers, 3-1...Preston Wilson's 2-run homer in the 4th provided the lead...attendance 36,552 which I think is our best-ever for a Dodgers visit (they don't draw at Nats Park for some reason)...record now 57-50...http://espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=250803120

I never leave early, and I'm about to if StaBBen walks someone again.

I left right after Reyes scored - after a full doubleheader and watching the Nats mail it in in the second match I really had no desire to battle the moshpit at Navy Yard station, so I thought I'd get a bit of a jump on it.

Some early thirties guy in Hanley Ramirez shirt was heckling badly and standing up towards the end of the game. He did "Hey battter,...", called Harper a "dork", and called Lombo "northern monkey". I ended up telling him to sit down and shut up, the usher came out to settle us down, he cussed at the user but he sat and they tossed him a little later.

Good to see the stewards finally acted on it.

I stayed the full doubleheader till Reyes scored the fourth run in the nightcap - recall seeing, at most, one or two people in Marlins colours (old or new).

I saw quite a few Marlins tshirts although I don't recall seeing a jersey, a Vikings fan, and only one idiot which is pretty good for a double header with $5 oil cans. Granted I don't really look for opposing fans either.

He also wasn't calling Harper a "dork" that is just the censors. :?
