well if he was pitching at UCLA I bet he would have gone in the mid first round.

OK- but it's not like he was some gem we took in the tenth round - we drafted him higher than purke or cole

The point is, you find talent wherever you can get it. Whether its California or New Jersey. Kids in California and Florida can slip through the cracks as well.

We've actually done well outside the top 100 picks or so. Derek Norris was a 4th rounder. Tom Milone 10th. Michael Taylor 7th. John Lannan 11th. Brad Peacock 41st. Robbie Ray 12th(fell for signability, I know).

I wouldnt consider taking Trout, in the first round, really slipping through the cracks. He's certainly risen quicker than anyone imagined, but people knew the talent, and he was discussed before the draft as an elite talent. He just happened to mature and develop quickly. Everyone develops at different rates. some don't develop at all.

Wasn't he a SS who the Nats converted?  He was not a full time pitcher, I think.

Think he pitched one or two innings in HS.

He was a draft and follow and turned out well for the Nats.

Just call it what it is, slot bonuses and be done with it. This pu$$syfooting around what it's called is absurd.

Owners sold out the GM's.

Teams not happy. Conference call this afternoon with teams and commissioners office to answer questions.

Owners agreed, not front office folks. RT @mkprost85: @Kevin_Goldstein if teams are not happy why did they agree to the CBA?

Just to be sure I understand...  the new rules would prevent something like a Strasburg/Harper duo going to the same team in back to back years from ever happening again, correct?  Not that it's the most pressing concern, just something that occurred to me.

Does anyone else think these new rules are going to lead to a lot more players being overdrafted?

The glass half-full on this (actually more like 1% full) is that it prevents a player and his agent from holding a team to their entire draft budget. For example, the #1 in 2012 is slotted at $7M and the team has a total budget of $12M for their draft. The #1 overall player could attempt to hold out for $10M+, basically putting the entire draft into one player. This new information would in essence restrict the cap on what a player could get, thus allowing a team to sign more than a handful of guys.

When I first saw the rough description of what this slotting implied, I saw serious contentious issues between top talent and teams

But still, this is absurd. Why MLB is so dead set on restricting the small pool of money set aside for amateur players is beyond me.

To shift spending from draftees to union members, and maybe a little sumthin' left over for the clubs.

Exactly. The players' union has a vested interest in that money going to Randy Wolf and Randy Choate, not Destin Hood.

Loophole closed.

That's a huge concession by the players, it keeps 40 man clocks from starting.

It fits.with the wider theme of the agreement- current members screwing future members and non-members.

The link of free agent compensation to draft picks will forever allow the MLBPA to turn the screws on players in the draft (if they so choose). If that link ever went away, the MLBPA would have no place at the table in what happened there

I think that an often overlooked fact is that the successes are so few in the draft and it is a way to contain costs. I still think the money will flow to those that are successful  and even the marginal ML players make 400,000 per year min.

The problem isn't the flow of money... the problem is MLB stepping in and telling clubs how much of their own money they can spend, and what it can be spent on.

Brian, what do you think will happen in the next draft in terms of % of guys signing with the clubs that drafted them as compared to previous experience?

I would expect some to hold out in hopes of getting a higher slot in the future, but that most will sign in the absence of significant leverage.

What a nice feeling to look at the top 10 players and say, "We aren't getting any of these guys."

I would love it if we could get our hands on Nick Williams, David Dahl, or Michael Wacha.  Nick Williams is really intriguing to me.  There is huge upside in that dude and would be a great addition.  I will admit that part of my interest in Wacha is so that we can start a cheer where we say "wacha wacha".  I just saw the muppetts movie and I have a huge mancrush on Fozzy.

It's a crappy feeling to me because I'm thinking, "We aren't getting any of these guys because Dud Selig just signed the MLB's death warrant and the Nats are restricted from spending on them."

Or we can go overslot and just say eff the system.  I would love to see a team do that.
