Dunn and Guzman's contracts are up after next season. Willingham will only have 1 year left after next season.

We have no second baseman.

The only spots we are solid at for now and the future are Catcher (Flores), 3B (Zim), CF (Morgan), and possibly RF (Dukes).

You could re-sign Dunn and Willingham for 1B and LF.  We really only need to address 2B and SS for the forseeable future as long as Flores can stay healthy.

From there it's trying to figure out who shakes out in the rotation.  Bullpens are always crapshoots.  You're better off grooming your relievers from within the organization and letting them move on when they're ineffective.  No sense in signing RP as FA's.  They're essentially all the same unless they're elite closers like Rivera, Nathan, Papelbon, et al.

ah, i'm just so tired of losing baseball and being the laughing stock of the majors.  i hate going to/coming home from the ballpark knowing we're this many games back, while other teams are in a race or at least friggin respectable.

we haven't had anything close to a winner since '05 and then the lerners come in house and ruin it all (we're getting progressively worse every year they have owned the club).  hopefully next year is better, but we need some major help.

ok, so let's get rid of all three right this very second, and replace them *this* offseason, since their contracts expire AFTER 2010. we can focus on our real problems (Pitching) some other time.

We have no second baseman.

yeah, you are correct on that one.

The only spots we are solid at for now and the future are Catcher (Flores), 3B (Zim), CF (Morgan), and possibly RF (Dukes).

Flores and Dukes are good but currently unreliable health-wise.  Morgan is turning 30, and keep in mind that Teh Speeeeeeeeeed is always the first thing to go. I say we get another 3 years out of Morgan, tops before we need to be concerned about a new Cfer. we're solid at 3B.

I'd extend Dunn 2 more years. He plays an adequate enough 1B that we can afford to keep his bat around for a little while longer. We can also extend Willingham for 2-3 years if push comes to shove. then both Dunn and Willingham will be like 32 or 33 when their contracts expire. (I think Dunn is 28 or 29 currently, and Willingham is 30)

potentially, we are solid everywhere except 2b and SS, position-player-wise. it remains to be seen if Flores and Dukes can stay healthy for a year, and if Desmond is the real deal or a flash-in-the-pan.  We definitely need a new 2nd Baseman.

as I said, for the most part, all the rebuilding will need to take place on the Pitching Mound. not in the lineup.

then again, I'm thinking of 2010. You may be thinking about 2012/2013.

very true, j-mad.  our pitching is the biggest concern.

flores hasn't stayed healthy in the last two years, that's why i hope the club really goes after an older catcher who has started games in recent years and has performed adequately rather than relying on two AAAA guys who are better served to play once every week and a half/two weeks.  part of the problem, again, is the fact flores can't stay healthy.

dukes is the same way, but for the most part has stayed healthy.  i think with consistent playing time he can be a .280/25 HR/80 RBI guy.  he's been on a tear recently.  i like the willingham / morgan / dukes OF.

2b/ss are major issues and i'm glad rizzo knows that.  it wouldn't be the end of the world if we kept guz and then either picked up aki/figgins/hudson or moved guz to 2B and hope that desmond can step up.

Incorrect.  The team improved from 2006 to 2007.

Didn't Lee walk 3 guys in that inning and then Bard swings at 3 straight?  he's a catcher for gods sake!

They owned the team during the '06 draft and offseason.  Don't get cute - your statement was incorrect.  I get your point, but it was still incorrect.

I think you and the LAC bunch need to realize that the Lerners, aside from obviously making some mistakes, have also been faced with a lot more than the average adversity faced by owners of a rebuilding team.  If they cheap out this offseason, I will be as pissed as anyone, but let's not jump to conclusions about their performance thus far.
