Wasn't Virginia a dry state not so long ago?

I guess "dry" in the taxed sense.  Plenty of wisps of smoke in the woods, I'm sure.

Hmm... I come from a family of non-drinkers, even socially, but that's news to me. I know my parents were shocked when they found out VA allowed liquor sales on Sundays about a decade back, so Virginia definitely has had antiquated laws (I know folks from MD were shocked by the concept of an ABC store.), but totally dry... Without Googling it, I still feel safe enough saying I don't think so, at least not dating back as far as my parent's generation, the 40s and 50s.

You mean besides prohibition?

My in-laws were referring to (I thought) a period of statewide prohibition after the 33rd amendment, but perhaps they were referring to counties.  I guess some counties are still that way?

When I was growing up, the county that my grandma lived in was dry on Sundays. But not sure if it was because of alcohol or because the stores were all closed.

Like that in PA as well.    Sundays, everything was closed.   I think they were referred to as the "blue laws".     As a matter of fact, if a Pirates game went beyond a certain time, it was suspended and picked up at a later date.    My GGrandmother was Amish (left the order) and it was even stranger at their house   ...   and my Grandmother's too.

I went to C of E midnight mass once, and I was the least drunk person in the place.  I think everyone came straight from the pub.

I'll save my prohibitionist ranting, as I'm already sad enough the space thread became a booze thread from my own instigation.

I will say this much - I got a good kick out of finally watching the Hostages pilot episode today. Dad/Coach rips Sonny Boy a new one for his collection towards "alcohol/beer and fake IDs."

Non-drinker I am, I made a point to look - sure enough, during that very freaking scene and speech, daddy dearest is drinking... a beer.

My point, and I actually do have one on this topic this time, is we've got some crazy views with alcohol in this country. Do as I say, not as I do to the extreme - Booze is evil, except in Church its Christ's blood! Partay time! Don't you dare drink, but if you're 21... partay time! The world would be such a better place if people stopped telling other people how to live.

If ever you want to see a movie in the IMAX - 3D format, this is the one.

Bring earplugs for the previews, however.

I can see awards in this flick's future.  And Sandra Bullock's legs look very fit indeed.
