I know the guy is a black mark on the franchise, and made a joke of what was an already crumbling minor league system... but why was the guy shipped back to the Dominican?

His numbers warranted a promotion, not a trip back to the DSL. Was he deported by the United States when they figured out that he wasn't who he said he was, or did the Nationals voluntarily send him back home?

If the United States deported him, what's the points of the Nats holding on to him?

If the Nats sent him back home? What more does the guy need to prove to face advanced competition?

In 2008, his last year in the states, he hit .343/.431/.475/.906 in 181 at-bats in the GCL. Sure he was old for the league, but those stats are still solid and should have warranted a promotion, regardless of the drama surrounding him.

So, what happens? He doesn't get cut, he doesn't get promoted, he gets sent back to the Dominican to play on the Nats DSL team.

It's now 2010, Alvarez has been with the DSL team for two years now. Currently he's tearing up the DSL to the tune of .333/.476/.442/.918 in 129 at-bats.

Obviously the guy did a lot of damage to the franchise... but if you didn't plan on cutting him, why wasn't he promoted up to see if he could still help the franchise down the line? I know he was older than the players he was playing against... but with the numbers he put up, I'm surprised he was never given a chance to prove he was the real deal against better competition.

So, does anyone know why he is on the DSL team? Is he not allowed in America? Do the Nats not want to bring him back? If so, why hasn't he been cut?

It's a controversial stance, but I want to know why a guy with his numbers, hasn't been given a legit chance to make it in pro ball?

Alvarez will never get a work visa so he's in the DSL until the Nats decide to release him

Trade him to Japan (or the Blue Jays). I've actually always wondered, what happens if a player is barred from entering Canada?  I think the Js should have to forfeit those games for being Canadian, but that's just me

I think it actually says something positive about our franchise that he stole $1.4 million from us, can never get a work visa in the U.S., and instead of sending him packing we're giving him a job in our summer league.

Of course, having been to the D.R., I don't know if that gives us a better reputation than if the people in his neighborhood had found him in a refrigerated meat truck.

What's their thinking on this? They want him to 'earn' his bonus money?

I would imagine that you wouldn't want to give playing time to a guy at a key position (SS) if he has no future value to you.

I think the Rangers have a pitcher on their staff, Alexi Ogando, who was involved in a fake marriage / visa scam in 2005 and barred from the US for a while.  I think once the US government relented, the kid pitched a half a season in the mionrs before he became a set up guy for Feliz.

I was wondering where he was too....I thought even if he was 23, we coulda promoted him to a higher level to see what he's got. Anyways, it seems that he has more complicated issues, Brian pointed out visa issues, it's too bad.

Im sort of lost. I knew there was trouble getting him a visa, but he'll NEVER be allowed? Is that the ne w stance?

There have been quite a few that have been found out to have used fake names and are in the bigs. Ramon Ortiz comes to mind.

He probably falsified his visa application. He's lucky he's not facing criminal charges.

I doubt he even filled it out. Probably his agent or Bowden did all the paper work.

I'd be surprised if it happened in the next 2-3 years, and at that point is it worth it?

Apparently he finally got a work visa for the US.

He's listed as being transfered to Auburn's roster.

That's amazing.  He's also listed as a DH.  I would love to see a Post article about this move - find out the details and get the FO to comment on what their plans are with him.  Amazing.

Papa Lerner is going to work him like a slave to repay him. I bet he whooped his boys when they owed him $10. Just imagine what he is going to do with this kid to get his million back.

Isn't this the guy Mark Lerner and Jim Bowden signed at 2am after they bought the team from MLB?

Prolly still here to sell tickets and nothing else.  At 24 he was hitting .305 against 17 year olds?  Man, he should have hit .450 if he was a real "prospect".  I can't see this going very well for anyone.

I don't have a problem with the Nats playing Smiley. But... I'd move him to a level where he'd be playing against his peers. He doesn't belong in short season ball. He's 25 he should be at Potomac (high-A) where he'd still be one of the older players on the roster.
