As the front rushes east Wednesday, downpours and storms will be able to tap into very high winds just above the surface and bring them down to the surface in heavier downpours. The second diagram shows forecast windspeeds above the surface on Wednesday afternoon, with the area circled in red reflecting where gusts could exceed 50mph at the surface. This are includes southeastern New England including Boston, the New York City metro area, Philadelphia, Washington, DC and Baltimore, and south along coastal Virginia and North/South Carolina. Some gusts may even exceed 74mph, which would make them hurricane-force: the threat of these types of winds are greatest over the DelMarVa area and New Jersey.
