Long long ago in a game in a league far far away, our Nats had a surprise rookie pitcher made the 1961 (?) All-star team. Joe McClain had been a minor-leaguer for the White Sox until the AL formed the expansion Senators.
When Ralph Houk sent McClain into tghe ASG, Joe said, "Hold on, I've got to get my pine-tar". McClain dunked his pitching arm into a bucket of pine-tar, right up to the elbow. In the first game McClain pitched against the Yankees, Houk went to the umpires and asked them to shake hands with McClain. Our phenom kid was told to wash his arm...and pitched like dirt the rest of the season. And was gone.
