Experience or talent?
« Topic Start: October 13, 2012, 03:28:50 PM »
The talking heads on MLB on XM are noting today that if you look at the final four teams, 3 of them have won the WS in the last 3 years, the 4th is going into its 2nd straight ALCS.

So as you look at the Nationals, what the bigger factor in the collapse - not being as talented as the Cards, or lacking playoff experience?

Not playing as well...

I think experience counts for a lot. That's why this year was important for the development of the squad. Next year the Nats will have the talent AND the experience.

I hope you are right.  I think only Jackson, Werth and LaRoche had playoff experience, correct?  I do think we need to bring a bullpen arm who has been to the playoffs.

Well, next year we'll have at least 5 of them.

We pitched tight and couldn't throw strikes.  I think this team will be much more relaxed and will pitch up to their talent.  I still believe we are the best team in baseball.

Except all those teams lacked experience when they were first won

Experience. Plain and simple.

Guys like Gio and Storen have never played in the postseason. This was a learning experience for them. They know what to expect  now.

I doubt there were as young as the Nats. This team was the youngest in MLB this year and teams like that don't win WS usually.

The giants first time around relied on a young Lincecum and Cain,  the Yankees,  first time with this group had a rookie short stop pushing them over the top.  Experience only matters if you have talent,  and the converse isn't true

That's not even close to being the truth.

I recall the Giants having a lot of veteran talent in 2010.  And the Cards are in the playoffs almost every year.

The giants had good young pitching and Cody Ross

correct, we weren't even in the top 5.  Atlanta and Oakland were younger.

Oakland was... but not Atlanta. They're one of the older teams.

Washington was 21 out of 30 in age. Once again, not even close to being the youngest team in the league.

Are they factoring in the manager's age? Because that's not really fair ....

Didn't someone say earlier that the Nats were 3rd youngest?  :lmao:

Linty, for god sakes, you're using ESPN's garbage age counter!?  That thing doesn't weigh playing time, which means that it counts Cesar Izturis's age just as much as it does Harper's.

Do you have a better one?

And last I checked, average age counts all equally. Why should Harper count more because he played more. It's not average age of starters, it's average age of all the players that were on your roster.

They probably are.  Linty just happened to use a meaningless stat that acts as if Carlos Maldonado's age is just as important as Ian Desmond's.

Uhh, b-ref?

And do they have an average team age? They only have batter age and pitcher age... nothing combined.

Even then, Nats are clearly not the youngest team.

They aren't, but they're probably in the top 5, and the age would have to be markedly lower than the figure ESPN gave.
