You humor me about the sub-.500 team at #6 that should be broken up.  But thanks, I appreciate it, and will have some chicken and beer to celebrate.

2) – (Last Week – 3) - They'll probably be making franchise history frequently these next few years. Here's one example that will happen soon. These Nats are 18 games above .500. The most games the Washington Nationals have ever been above .500 is 19, back in their inaugural season (2005).

That's really going to piss off the former Expos fan contingent.

I'll just say they're not as good as the 1994 Expos, at least not yet.  They're on pace to finish better than any other Expos/Nats team ever, though.

Were either Senators 1 or 2 more than 19 games over .500 after Walter Johnson retired?

No. 1

Quote
For the first time in 10 weeks, we have a new first place team. With the Rangers sputtering and the Nationals surging, Washington has finally overtaken Texas for the No. 1 spot in our Power Rankings after being second to the Rangers since late May.

The Nats have the top starting pitcher WAR in baseball and have led the league in position player WAR in July, thanks to an insane month from Ryan Zimmerman (10 HR, .434 OBP) and solid performances from role players Danny Espinosa (0.9 WAR) and Roger Bernadina (0.7). With Jayson Werth set to return from a broken wrist this week and Ian Desmond not long after from his oblique strain, Washington's reign as the top team in the Rankings may just be getting started.

Last Week: 2
Washington Nationals
WAR Winning Percentage: .616; Current Winning Percentage: .604; WAR Wins: 62; Current Wins: 61
The Nationals went 6-1 last week, including an extra innings victory on Sunday after being down six runs in the eighth inning. Michael Morse and Adam LaRoche have supplied the power lately, each belting three homers last week, and Washington's lineup should get stronger this week as Jayson Werth returns. They continue to insist that they're going to shut down Stephen Strasburg at some point, but his teammates may be forcing them to consider the present more than the future.

The Nats were never down 6 runs on Sunday, were they?  I think the biggest deficit in the game was 4 runs (7 to 3).

2) – (Last Week – 3) - Jordan Zimmermann, the Nationals' No. 3 starter, has allowed as many baserunners in July as he has strikeouts (31), leading to an ERA of 0.97 for the month.

2) – (Last Week – 2) - The Nationals have won eight of their past 10 games, and are tied with the Reds for the best record in the NL. Stephen Strasburg, who is 11-4 with a 2.76 ERA and a Major League-leading 11.6 strikeouts per nine innings, will be shut down when he reaches his innings limit, and the Nats might be in the market for another top-notch pitcher to replace their ace down the stretch.

2. Washington Nationals (+1, 61-40, 1st in NL East)

This Week: vs. Philadelphia (3), vs. Miami (4)

The Nationals have been very fortunate with who their opponents have been the last few weeks, catching the Mets at their absolute worst, backing that up with the disbanding Brewers, and now getting the bottom two teams in the East at home this week. The headlines always go to Gio Gonzalez and Stephen Strasburg, but an argument could be made that Jordan Zimmermann is having the best season in their stacked rotation. 21 starts this season, 19 quality starts for Zimmermann. The run support hasn’t been there, which is why he only has 8 wins despite a 2.23 ERA.

catching the Mets at their absolute worst,

I don't know, I think we were a major part of creating their worst.

Oh my God, give me a break.

How about the killer schedule we had up until then?

The Reds jumped to #1 at WaiverWireBlog.com and they rode the cream puffiest schedule to a 10 game winning streak and WaiverWireBlog didn't mention that.

2) – (Last Week – 2) - Think maybe Stephen Strasburg was bad Tuesday so he could only inch four innings closer to his team-imposed limit? Next up, the faux-injury John Smoltz recommended.

We just lost a series to a last place team that traded away it's outfield

2) – (Last Week – 4) - Ian who? The Nationals won six of seven after placing top hitter Ian Desmond on the DL last Monday.
