Opening Night Roster Set

The Capitals set their 23-man opening night roster on Tuesday when they sent forward Alexandre Giroux to Hershey of the American Hockey League and placed left wing Matt Pettinger on injured reserve.

Washington?s 24-man traveling party will include two goaltenders (Brent Johnson and Olie Kolzig), eight defensemen (Ben Clymer, Steve Eminger, John Erskine, Mike Green, Jamie Heward, Shaone Morrisonn, Bryan Muir and Brian Pothier), 13 healthy forwards (Kris Beech, Matt Bradley, Donald Brashear, Chris Clark, Rico Fata, Boyd Gordon, Jakub Klepis, Brooks Laich, Alex Ovechkin, Alexander Semin, Brian Sutherby, Richard Zednik and Dainius Zubrus) plus Pettinger.

Thirteen Capitals from last year?s opening night roster are also on this season?s opening night roster. Five of the players on Washington?s 2006-07 opening night roster were members of the 2005-06 AHL Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears: Green, Beech, Gordon, Klepis and Laich.

A dozen of the 2006-07 Capitals were chosen in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft.

A handful of injuries late in training camp prevented the Caps from icing their best lineup in the last preseason game, a 4-2 loss to Carolina on Sunday. A few nicked up players did not dampen what Caps coach Glen Hanlon saw as a positive camp.

?Scotty Bowman unquestionably has been documented as one of the greatest coaches ever,? notes Hanlon, ?and they didn?t have a lineup that was the same from one minute to the next. I like the fact that we got to see different players do different things. I do think that there has to be something with your power play group, to have them together. It?s so important. And to get where we have to get to, that was my only concern going into the [last preseason] game.

?I love our systems, I love how they?ve executed the systems, I love our attention to defensive play, the addition of the skill and speed that we have. There is no doubt that we?re so far ahead of last year in where we are and now we just have to parlay that into some wins.?

If there is sufficient interest, I could set up a "Caps Corner" or something in here, but I think the off-topic section as is seems to be filling that role pretty well

Personally I'm just not into hockey, sorry guys ;)

Chief, there's no need. The Caps have a message board if anyone wants to join. www.washingtoncaps.com, you'll see the forums on the left (if you have any questions when you join, I'm capsfan28)

The off-topic board is fine for Caps talk here.

Fearless Predictions for '06/07

The Caps might make the playoffs.  Then again, they might not.

The Caps won't make a Stanley Cup Run.  Unless they get a defenseman that is of NHL talent.

Someone will criticize Clarke for not being a good captain.

The Verizon Center ushers will continue to be the WORST in the NHL.

The Caps will enjoy a hot stretch.  Some fans will predict a cup.

The Caps will suffer through a slump period.  Some fans will call for Hanlon to be fired.

Caps fans will have a beer or two.

Kolzig will let in some questionable goals 5-hole.

Kolzig will make some spectacular saves down low.

Johnson will let in some bad goals while looking like a goalie who has no clue as to how to play his position.

Johnson will make some spectacular saves while looking like a goalie who has no clue as to how to play his position.

Someone will bring up the Jagr experiment.

Someone will disagree with the point made by the person who brought up the Jagr experiment.

Everyone will pile on.

Caps fans will log on the Caps message board and express a jaundiced opinion on some topic.

Someone will disagree with a ref's call.

Someone will disagree with a linesman's call.

Everyone will complain about overpriced items at the Verizon Center.

Millions will be spent on overpriced items at the Verizon Center.

The Caps won't make a trade.

Ovechkin will make some spectacular plays.  Fans will hail him as the leagues best.

Ovechkin will make some stupid mistakes.  Fans will jeer at him as the leagues best.

Someone will bring up the Jagr experiment.

Someone will disagree with the point made by the person who brought up the Jagr experiment.

Everyone will pile on.

Teddy Leonsis will lose money

Someone will bring up the Peter Bondra.

Someone will disagree with the point made by the person who brought up Peter Bondra.

Everyone will pile on.

Craig Laughlin will not say, "Put the bisquit in the basket."

Fans on the Caps message board will quote the plus/minus statistics for several players.

Joe Benenati will employ another very tired cliche.

Al Koken will kiss up to players, coaches, officials, managers, owners, politicians, celebrities, and any random derelict who he talks to during Capitals Postgame LIVE!

Joe Reekie will laugh at every unfunny comment made by Smokin Al.

Craig Laughlin will continue doing what he does.  Whatever that is.

The Caps will suffer a heartbreaking, controversial loss to the Flyers.

Someone will vent about something written by Tony Kornheiser.

Fans will lament not being able to listen to Caps games on a REAL radio station.

No one will lament not being able to enjoy Steve Kolbe.

Older fans will die a little inside every time the Caps lose a 3 games to 1 lead in the playoffs.

Someone will bring up the Jagr experiment and Peter Bondra.

Someone will disagree with the point made by the person who brought up the Jagr experiment and Peter Bondra.

Everyone will pile on.

Whatever happens this year, the fans will be back next year.

Go Caps!

Question about the Caps board:

I just signed up but it won't let me post right off the bat.  What gives with that?

Also, how can you choose an avatar rather than go through those pathetic galleries?

You need to get the validation email, I think to post.

Sorry Colten, but the Rangers need the luck. A team of Czechs can't beat a TEAM like the Caps.

They look awful tonight, similar to how they looked all last year.  No energy, no offensive rhythm, careless puck handling, and a non-existent defense.
