According to Ladson, RZ asked Davey "Is there any other position he plays?"

SS, if need be?

Can we just have an Anthony Rendon forum? Not sure one thread works or that it is properly respectful.

Indeed. Multiple threads about the different positions he could play.

Rendon's spring:

22AB .364 / .391 / .909 / 1.300
3 HR

A small sample size, but 1/6 against LHP, 7/16 vs. RHP

I know it's spring, but...

Danny better come out on fire. Because if Rendon shows that he can play even close to average second base defense, the Nats gotta call him up.

Is it sad that I'm almost hoping for an injury, just to see what this guy can do in the majors?

I'd rather we just tell Espinosa to freak off so we can slot him in here lol.

Until then, we'll have to live with Danny's .222/.297/.325 hitting

The irrational hatred of Danny Espinosa I guess shows how far this team has come.

People had the same for Ian before the start of last year and were calling for Danny to move over to SS.  Danny will crush at the plate and all will be forgotten.  Mark my words.

I don't really want Rendon at 2B until he shows that his ankles can hold up playing 3B for an extended period.

But the gap between what Desmond was doing and what Espinosa is doing is so wide... they really shouldn't be compared.

Espinosa is already a Top 15 2B in the game... Desmond was constantly rated as one of the three worst SS's in the game before his breakout year.

Just to compare their first two full seasons in the pros.

wOBA

Desmond
2010 - 86
2011 - 79
Average = 82.5

Espinosa
2011 - 103
2012 - 94
Average = 98.5

Desmond was 16% worse at hitting than Danny, in relation to the league average his first two season... they're really not comparable when people say this is the make or break year for Danny.

Whatever difference there is between the two players likely has very little effect on whether we make the playoffs. It could have an effect on the playoffs - however, Rendon will almost certainly be on the playoff roster anyways. You don't need to make a rash callup to ensure yourself the option of playing Rendon during the playoffs. Further, until Rendon proves himself healthy enough to play a 140-game schedule, you can't call him up. Whatever you PERSONALLY think of Espinosa, he's still a valuable asset to teams around the league. You don't crater his value by jerking him in and out of the starting lineup (if Rendon were to get called up and then injure himself/not perform).

This decision will look a lot clearer next offseason, and that is when a major move will be made (if a major move needs to be made at all). Any of the following things could look like the best move for the team, and I don't think any is much more likely than any of the others:

1. Trading Desmond and moving Espy to SS and Rendon to 2B
2. Trading LaRoche and moving Zimmerman to 1B and Rendon to 3B
3. Trading Espy and moving Rendon to 2B
4. Rendon needing another half season or more at AAA next season after struggling at AA.

Any of those moves could easily look viable after this season. Desmond's 2012 gains, Espy's 2012 struggles, Zimmerman's throwing issues being solved, and Rendon's developement are not sure things for 2013.

By optioning him to AA, it looks like they'll give him a month or two in AA, provided he stays healthy, then transfer him to AAA till about August... and go from there.

I have to think it would almost be unprecedented for a team with World Series aspirations to yank a good-but-not-great player out of the lineup and hand the position to an untested rookie in mid-season. No matter how promising a rookie is, it's pretty unexpected for one to be better than an average player.

Look at the 2011 top position prospects: Trout, Harper, Brown, Hosmer, Moustakas, Ackley, Machado, Freeman, Jennings, Belt.

Some of them have struggled (even Trout his first season of 140 PA), some have held their own. Only Harper, in my opinion, came up his first season and had the kind of WOW performance I'd expect to push an above-average player out of a key position.

But I don't think it's reasonable to expect Rendon to be capable of a top-3 ROY type performance without having played more than 65 games in a year, in his life.
