If I had more time on my hands I'd do a mockup MS KB article for a spoof "end of the world" bug.

I'm repurposing my computers so I moved each one down a rung and replaced the one at the top.

I was SO CLOSE to getting an i7 or i5 but the price of RAM ()  forced me to AMD.  If RAM was the price that it was last year, I'd have gone Intel.  Memory is, literally, twice the price it was last year.  I spent  over $200 on 8GB of RAM and I wanted more RAM but I wasn't going to spend any more.

I also bought a Blu-ray burner, which I've never had before.  I'm going to put that in my current #1, soon to be #2 pc because that's where I'd use it most readily.

And I bought 2 1.5 TB hard drives, for $195.  I'm still holding off on the SSD for a real price drop.  Right now, I need space more than top speed, anyway.

I don't understand how RAM drove you to AMD.  A spot check shows DDR2 and DDR3 selling at about the same price, and most of AMD's newer stuff has moved to DDR3 anyway.

Going to an Intel 80GB SSD for OS/apps was a nice upgrade for me, but I really only got it because it was the only thing left to upgrade and they had an awesome one-day sale on the retail box 2nd gens a while back.  For the money, a nice i7 is a better overall upgrade unless you're doing something specifically bottlenecked at the storage level, and provided you have a use for the additional CPU power.

If the RAM was, say, $100 cheaper then I'd have an extra $100 dollars for the processor and still spent the same amount, total.

I also could have bought less memory, 4GB, for example, and gone Intel.  That would have made the total price about the same.

The total price, not the individual price of the CPU,  was the sticking point.

Generally, yes.  Also much lower power consumption and zero noise.  And because they're 2.5" form factor, you can use them in desktops or laptops.

words

ah okay, gotcha.

I'd have gone with 4GB and Intel, which is actually what I did when upgrading from a Q6600 with 8GB.  I'll probably add the other 4 GB at some point but I didn't make use of it often enough on my old setup to bother initially.  Of course with RAM prices having gone up now I wish I had :?

I'm trying to see if there are any good deals to be had on notebooks for my boss.  I can't get anything to load though.  He has mentioned netbook, and I see a 10.2" Gateway for $199.  I think he would be better off with a full size notebook though.

The Lite-on BD reader for 49 bucks is pretty tempting, esp as I already use my computer to play all my movies.

Existing computer ==> 20ft HDMI cable ($20) ==> existing TV

Cheaper than buying a standalone player

That's ok.  I bought it again and I'm returning the one I bought yesterday!

So far I'm returning the Blu-ray drive, RAM and a hard drive.  So I'm getting the same Blu-ray drive, faster RAM and a bigger hard drive and taking $100 off the total!.

ok nerds, i need your help:

i tried installing AIM 7 today (haven't used it in years), but when I try to run it, i get an error that says the side-by-side configuration is incorrect. upon searching on google, i don't really understand the solutions. a lot of things say to uninstall microsoft visual c++ 2005 redistributable, but i'm always wary of uninstalling something like that. anyone have a potential solutions? there's a 2008 version of the c++ that is available for download, btw. this is the only program that has an issue like this...

Why in the world would you keep using a resource-hogging, virus prone  program like AIM?
