Do teams typically have a guy who would basically just pinch run?

I think Kansas City did, once. The owner proposed to improve baseball by having designated runners as well as DH's. Sorry, but I can't remember the details. Memory (from long, long ago) says that they hired a sprint champion. It didn't last.

...and you thought I was kidding. Charlie Finley's KC A's had Alan Lewis, who was used mostly as a pinch runner, and often used pitcher John Odom as a pinch runner. Finley liked the idea so much that he hired Herb Washington around 1974 to the Oakland A's, where he never hit or fielded. See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herb_Washington

It notes that Washington's baseball card listed him as "Pinch Runner".

Matt Alexander was used in a similar fashion.

The talking heads on MLB were actually floating the rumour about the Nats putting Strasburg on the playoff roster "in the event they get down in a series they would def. Use him".
Dopes.

That'd be terrible for his arm. He won't be on the roster.

Does Lannan make the roster if we end up facing Atlanta in the NLDS?

Davey says he loves stacking lefties vs them and the Braves really do suck vs LHPs.

Lannan has pitched admirably since coming up.  Groundballer who actually gets outs, unlike Wang.

Remember when Lannan struck out Barry Bonds with flashbulbs going off left and right?  When he stopped the bleeding for the Nats against Atlanta in a huge series earlier in the season?

Yeah, I have no problem with him starting in the postseason.  I'd almost rather have him than headcase Detwiler or Jackson who's been laying eggs all over the place lately.

Yankees are doing that with Gardner, who can't hit yet.

Bump again.

Lannan may be 4th starter if we get the Barves

Quote
the Nationals are still considering Lannan.

“Yeah,” Johnson said before largely deflecting the question. “You’re asking questions that don’t need to be answered yet. We don’t even know who we’re playing, and it could be two series later. I’ll address that when it’s time to address it.”

Johnson wants to build his rotation based on the opponent, and the Braves feature a heavily left-handed lineup that includes Michael Bourn, Jason Heyward and Freddie Freeman. Against left-handed starters this year, the Braves have gone 30-31, 17th in the majors. Against right-handers, they are 63-37, best in the majors.

Lannan also has a history of success against the Braves. This year, he allowed them two runs over seven dazzling innings in one start. In his career, he has a 3.20 ERA in 98 1/3 innings against the Braves.

Indeed it would

I would pitch Gio and Lannan in Atlanta then Detwiler for game 3 here (he's been nails in DC)

The Barves fear Lannan.  Barves are like the anti-Phils.

Gio, Lannan, JZ .... save detwiler for relief. If he doesn't get used by Game 4, maybe him at home. Gio in Game 5 if necessary

After yesterday KEEP HIM IN! He is an absolutely stellar monster. And he's a great 1B backup. I'd rank him higher than DeRosa at this point.

I guess we'll see what happens come Sunday.

However I read somewhere that if we face the Braves in the DS, Davey is considering dropping Jackson from the rotation in favor of Lannan to hit them with three lefties.

Gorzo, Lannan, Garcia, and Jackson are in a mix for 4th starter and 2 bullpen slots.  I suppose Eury would be the only other guy under consideration if they went with a 7 man bullpen.

Strasburg gets to bask in DeRosa's veteraniness whereever non-rostered guys are allowed.  If it is Stonewall and Gorzo instead of Lannan, Lannan and Stras can sit together and b!tch abotu how they should be out there.

Good of Davey to give DeRo a start at SS in what may be his last game.  Hope the team win's DeRosa a ring.

Lannan and DeRosa dropped from the roster, per MLB network and Borg Landshark.
