somehow I blew up at CCSP when, after that play, I got into a Strasburg shutdown argument after comparing the cautious treatment of SS to the let's tough it out way Shanny kept RG in the game.  I don't let the player make the call, especially when the back up (Lannan & Det in the playoffs in baseball, Cousins in football) were good options.

the only way this is comparable to SS situation, is if we had pitched SS in the playoffs.  He pitches great the first two innings while our offense builds a huge lead, and then winces during a pitch early in the third, after which his fastball is coming in at about 83 MPH and he cringes after every pitch, and Davey keeps him in there until finally by the seventh inning SS has given up the lead 10-9.  Until that happens, in no way were the situations similar.

Hate to say it but Lavar Arrington pointed out a big difference as well  ...  RGIII hadn't had surgery with the historical healing data.   Had he even had an MRI prior to yesterday?

It was clear that Griffin should not have played longer...as soon as he went into that sidelines room and returned with tape higher up his knee and leg, then it was clear he couldn't cut or plant. He was not sharp in Q2. Should never have started the second half. Cousins is more than good enough to move the team.

If ya get a chance, check the picture of RGIII in the Post ...  ugly.   Believe me, that hurts.

They should have signed Kurt Suzuki to back up RGIII.

The situations were not identical, of course, and I will even give they were not similar. But you can certainly draw parallels.

I'm going to guess that some people who are against the SS shutdown are rethinking that viewpoint right now.

Stras. had to do with his health, even aside from RGIII's health (not that I'm discounting it), he should have been pulled for ineffectiveness

People are tweeting a report from WRIC-TV in Richmond, VA:

According to WRIC-TV, Robert Griffin III has a Torn ACL & PCL, expected to miss 14-18 months... #RGIII #nfl

But I haven't seen anything else reporting this. I do see reports of him going to Florida tomorrow for further testing.

No one else is reporting it.  He's scheduled to go to Florida tomorrow to meet with Dr. Andrews.  According to Shanahan, today's MRI was inconclusive.  I think that would have been conclusive, it that was the injury.

Robert Griffin III has partial tears of ACL and LCL, MRI suggests

Posted by Mark Maske and Mike Jones on January 7, 2013 at 5:17 pm

The MRI exam of Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III’s right knee suggested that Griffin has suffered partial tears of his anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments, according to several people with knowledge of the test results.

Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Griffin is scheduled to be examined Tuesday in Pensacola, Fla., by orthopedic surgeon James Andrews to determine whether the test results show new or previous injuries.

It was not immediately clear whether surgery would be required or how long Griffin would be sidelined if the partial ligament tears are determined to be fresh injuries. Griffin suffered a torn ACL in the same knee in 2009 while he was in college at Baylor, and has been playing in recent weeks with a mild sprain of the LCL.

One person with knowledge of the situation said Griffin might have to undergo exploratory surgery to determine the extent of the damage and whether the injuries are new. Another said Griffin hopes to avoid full-blown reconstructive surgery if the tears are partial, even if they are new injuries.

A third person familiar with the case, asked whether the ligament damage is new or a matter of previous injuries showing up on Griffin’s MRI, said: “That’s what we’re trying to find out.”

Shanahan said at his news conference Monday at Redskins Park that he didn’t know the extent of the damage to Griffin’s knee or how long it will take the quarterback, who just completed his rookie season, to recover. Shanahan said it was unclear whether Griffin will play in the Pro Bowl, to which he was elected, or be ready to participate in the team’s offseason workouts and practices.

Griffin underwent an MRI exam after his knee buckled in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 24-14 playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks at FedEx Field and he left the field for good. Shanahan said the results of that exam are open to interpretation because of Griffin’s previous injuries.

That he's going for a second (really third or fourth) MRI is a really bad sign.  The CYA action between Mensa Mike crapihan and Dr Andrews is pretty funny too, though I doubt it's going to end with crapihan looking more like Clownihan when it's all over with.  Like I told a friend of mine when Strasburg got hurt - he'll come back but the artist will not paint another masterpiece. Better hope he can turn into that pocket passer some of you seem to think he already is. :lmao:

That Cousins pick is looking brilliant.  And there's always Mike Vick for next year.

Or Cousins could be a bum like Caleb Hanie or Matt Flynn.

ESPN confirms - partially torn LCL, awaiting further info on ACL damage (but believed to be a partial tear as well).
