While I am more in favor of going with BPA and upside than 'settling,' I wouldn't mind Marrero. I think everyone here would agree it'd be awesome to have a standout glove at SS at the big league level, helping the staff even further.

If everything works out the way we hope, our offense should be pretty damn good in a couple years. If Harper and Rendon live up to their ability, we have one of the better hitting duos in the league. If they don't, the pick at 16 in this draft won't have anything to do with it. Added to them, Zimmerman and some combo of Lombo/Hood/Goodwin/Morse/Ramos is a lineup that should score pretty good runs. A SS behind the staff we have would make this team top notch.

There are definite concerns at the plate with him, but he did walk more than he struck out(even if only by 1) and he was 3rd on the team in RBI despite his questions. So he seems to be able to do some things at the plate, and coupled with the glove, should make him a solid player at the big league level. Not every player at the big league level is going to be a star.

With that said, Im probably still in the HS pitcher camp. McCullers, Hensley, or Eflin would be on my list. There's a lot of talk that Addison Russell may be able to stick at SS and with his bat, he'd be another high upside selection. I wouldn't even be against a Marcus Stroman selection. In the mid first, even if all he is is a great closer, thats still good value. He would be quick riser in that role, and could even help the big league club in that capacity come September and the playoffs, if we need a boost. You can then try him out in the rotation next year, and go from there. If he is only a reliever, he gives you the flexibility to move Storen for a big league piece, and not have any drop off in the pen.

Definitely a different feel this year. So many directions we could go.

Stroman would be a really good pick I think. We could use another late inning bullpen arm with Henry flaming out and Storen injured.

Not that you draft for need but from what I have heard about his stuff he is legit.

If the FO really believes in Lucas Sims(http://tenthinningstretch.blogspot.com/2012/05/profiles-of-top-22-pitchers-for-2012_24.html) as noted in the BA chat it'd be interesting for them to take him with their first pick in round 1. He'd likely sign for less than slot since he's projected to go late first and not mid first. Then we'd have extra money to spend on a guy who may slip through the cracks in the second round.

Law's latest mock:

Quote
Washington Nationals
Michael Wacha, RHP, Texas A&M

The dream scenario for the Nats is if Wacha or Heaney falls to here. Wacha's ceiling is limited, but his advanced changeup makes him a likely big leaguer.

it's funny how different the projections are drafting in our position this year even from last year- ceiling limited, but good change up is a dream scenario? I guess that just goes with winning

That scouting report doesn't fit the profile of what Rizzo wants from his pitchers, especially not in the first round.

Yeah - if it's a pitcher, I'd bet it's a guy who can throw in the mid 90's.

If it's a middle infielder, I'd bet it's a guy who is physically big for a middle infielder.

There's NO WAY that we pick another Marrero right? I mean, I'm not a superstitious man but if he Deven doesn't pan out we'll have given nearly $4 million dollars to that family.

That would be fine if there were no warning signs, but the kid is hitting .268/.329/.396 this year.

Let's spread our draft money to some other needy families.

At minorleaguebaseball.com, Sickels has us taking Deven Marrero and Matt Garrioch has us taking Courtney Hawkins.

A question Ive wondered for a bit - Anyone think we take the chance on Giolito if he falls to us? And would you agree with it? It would make it tough on us the rest of the draft with the money restrictions the league has set out, but he could prove to be worth it in the long run.

This would be the 4th year in a row that we would have drafted the most talented player in the draft.

I'm guessing that with the restrictions, at some point draftees will be told slot or pound sand - you have to figure that, absent an execptional talent, 9% over their pool will be the max a team will do since 10 over costs a pick- a first rounder who slides, but doesn't want to accept that is unsignable since a $1 million bump will already throw a team way over the 10% threshold.

edit, our pool looks like it'll be 4.4 million, so there is no way we can take a player who falls, but still wants better money

So Baseball America comes out with an iPad app and it's a separate subscription from their print subscriptions and their online subscriptions? What the heck?

What happened to guy whose career I ruined last year? (I still kind of sort of feel bad about that) Is he going to get picked again?

Linty, it's a lesson that he needed to learn.

Looks like he had another good year. .394/.471/.725, 16 HRs. Name is Zach Houchins.

Kevin Goldstein, BP with his guess.

Quote
16. Washington Nationals ($2.125M): Deven Marrero, SS, Arizona State
Rumors of Marrero going here have become louder than the ones of him going to Pittsburgh at eight. He's a Scott Boras client; the Nationals clearly have no issues with those, and they have a system with few up-the-middle prospects

I wonder what happens to Boras if a team takes his clients in the first, second, and third? Does he have to conflict himself out and drop two  of them, or does he screw one by trying to get higher bonuses for the other two leaving the third unsigned or below slot?

@JimCallisBA likes Lucas Sims, GA HS RHP for #Nats because of Roy Clark connect; details soon @masnnationals

Quote
Lucas Sims scouting report -- Lucas Sims is a 6'2", 195 lb. righthanded pitcher from Brookwood High School in Snellville, Georgia. Baseball America ranks Sims at #29 overall in their top 500. Keith Law and John Sickels both have Sims at #32. Kevin Goldstein has Sims at #28 in his top 30. Jonathan Mayo projects Sims to go to the Rays at #25 in his mock draft. Law, Piliere and Jim Callis both have Sims falling at least to the supplemental first round.

Sims is another prep righty who throws in the lower-90s and can occasionally get it into the mid- to upper-90s, and has both a slider and a curveball, with BA describing all three pitches as plus pitches. Sims also has a changeup which he reportedly throws more than most high school pitching prospects, even though it is his weakest pitch, in an apparent effort to work on improving it in game situations. Sims is described as athletic with a quick arm and smooth, clean arm action, but he's also not real big and doesn't figure to have a ton of projection left.

Sims sounds like another AJ Cole. Not a bad pick I suppose.
