I watched the whole game from my A/C'd living room.   He could have done it.

Good call.

Didn't FP mention something about them having to have a catcher in the lineup?

I just watched the replay.  It was Carpenter.  He did say that Flores had to bat because there had to be a catcher in the lineup.  Which is of course nonsense.  He corrected himself shortly after.

I noticed that Flores had to take a pitch, to allow the runners to steal, and it was a strike.  That put him in a huge whole. I don't see why a batter has to take a pitch on a steal.

Question is, how did Davey let him get announced.  That's something the manager controls.

The options were limited. Flores shows an ability to make contact. Ankiel is an all-or-nothing strikeout machine.

And that's why I would have gone with DeRosa if he's available.  Either mentally or physically, right now, Flores is in a very bad place.  He should never have been announced at that point.

Not only would I have had more confidence that DeRosa would get a hit ( ) he would have also been more likely to draw a walk, which have brought Harper to the plate with the bases loaded.

And if we had won the game in the ninth (like we should have) there would have been no need for a catcher in the field anyway.    ;)

BTW, Carp seemed to make a lot of mistakes yesterday ... more than normal ... pitch count ... how many errors the Rockies had ... the catcher thing.

Must have been the heat.

I would have opted for DeRosa too, but it is all 20/20 hindsight. Odds are against whoever is up there. The game was blown by the pen anyway, not by a PH decision.

“It was really a watershed moment for us,” said Mike Rizzo, the general manager. “It was something that could have went terribly wrong.”

Did Rizzo really say "could have went" or is it just bad editing.

Don't have them, it's just sorta part of the lexicon, at least it is here.

Yeah, that too.

4 relievers in an inning a few days after he said he mismanaged the bullpen.

If you're trying to use guys efficiently and stay off of Burnett and Clippard so much. Maybe try not bringing guys in for one batter? Playing the match ups hasn't been too effective.

I wouldn't say it was ineffective today.  An inning that started with the first two batters getting a free pass ended with only one run given up.  That could have been a LOT worse.  Without H-Rod in that inning no runs score and the only baserunner is the walk that Stammen issued.

Yeah I mean it worked today eventually, but the last couple times it gave up homers. I'm just not a fan of that strategy. Just me

Actually, walking the first two batters changes the entire inning.  If Stammen had started a clean inning, his pitch selection would likely have been different and he may not have walked that batter.

Henry Rodriguez did bad things to the bullpen today.

Right.  The problem was H-Rod not playing the matchup game.

One problem is HRod in general.

It doesn't really apply since Davey "backs" him, but Boz was good on this subject.

I think that's it...and notice that they didn't pitch HRod in any of the close games, or that must-win crusher they put on the Braves on Sunday.

Rizzo must be hoping for a trade...and I'm hoping that Bill Gates will give me $500 million.
