Ah yes, I remember it well....

Remember Hamburger Hamlet on Old Georgetown Rd? Well the Hamburger Hamlet I knew well and loved since highschool, IMO, does not exist. When I graduated WJ in 77, my Graduation dinner was here. Since then, even though I moved to Virginia, Birthdays were celebrated there.

They used ti have about 15-20 different burgers, pasta dishes and huge desserts. NO LONGER I am sad to say. They have been taken over by some west coast company called DUPARS (SEE bottom of article in the link). They say they retain the same menu but added some Dupars items. Its a lie. They DO have about 10 burgers. They still have the Zucchini Zircles I'ved always liked but gone are the tray of sauces. Gone are any pasta dishes. And Gone is the whole reason we go there for Birthdays is their Ultimate Chocolate Cake. A huge 6-8 Inch high Chocolate Cake with Fudge icing with huge scoops of Vanilla icecream topped with hot fudge sauce. Big enough to share usually a.party of 4 friends ordered 2 cakes and 4 forks. Huge disappointment!

The burger I ordered was put on a dry roll. The Sundaes we ordered were put on warm plates so it was soup when we got it.

They are open 24 hours. Personally, I rather go to IHOP!

There used to be a couple on Wisconsin Ave IIRC...one near Mazza Gallery in Chevy Chase and one somewhere in Georgetown.  I recall going there for birthdays...to my 12-13 year old mind, the hamburgers were, well, sex.

I remember one on upper Wisconsin not far from the District line.   It may be the one Ali refers to near what is now Mazza Gallery.

Found this in reference to closed Hamburger Hamlets:

Hamburger Hamlet
3125 M St. NW
Washington DC 20007

Hamburger Hamlet
5225 Wisconsin Ave. NW
Washington DC 20015

Anyone remember The Magic Pan or American Cafe?  Pied au Couchon?  The latter was a total destination at 4 a.m.

Used to be a movie theater across Dumbarton and up Wisconsin from the Lehi.   Then, it became a jewelry exchange or some such thing.   I think we've been down this path in another thread.   :)

I read somewhere that a Hot Shoppe still existed in our area.  True?

Right, my bad.  Connecticut and R.  I guess technically 20th & R.  Plus they've got the "L Ron Hubbard House" over on 19th where the Lord Starship Himself apparently lived.

Smart move.  There will be lots of people with Buddy Holly glasses and portable typewriters hitting it.

The Post reported one is to open next year:

After researching I found a Hot Shoppe to be opened at the Marriott Marquis in May of 2014.

What we really need back is Little Tavern.  That was a national treasure.

Both names ring a bell, but I can't really picture them.  That might have been before my time (as louche and debauched as I was at an early age, there really was a time when I didn't hang around seedy establishments...really...)

Well, I guess you never frequented the "Butterfly" before lower 14th ST became "respectable".    :P
