Am I the only one who can no longer see thread page numbers under unread posts? They are visible on new replies and when browsing topics

That's by design.  Looks cleaner that way, and page links are redundant.  The thread title links to the first page, the button links to the oldest unread post, and the last post button links to the last post.

I have tried a few different possible layouts for restoring the page links, but no matter where I put them they just look cluttered and awkward, and the usefulness of them seems limited on a page designed around taking you to unread posts.  I left them on the normal topic view because some people like to be able to size up a thread's popularity "at a glance".

I'm certainly open to suggestions.

I know this is nit picky but is there a way to get the page to render so there is not the "flash" effect when it renders the white on the blue?

If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, the answer would be "don't use F5 to reload pages" (or the browser reload button for that matter).  In IE and Chrome (at least on Windows), this causes the browser to reload page elements that are already stored in your browser cache.  Firefox on Windows generally DOESN'T do this even if you press F5 (CTRL-F5 does it instead).  Not sure about this behavior on Mac browsers but I think command-R on Mac Firefox behaves similarly to CTRL-F5 on Windows Firefox - I'd have to look.

Short answer: "No."

There *shouldn't* be any such effect during normal site navigation unless you're on a very slow connection and/or don't have the site fully cached.  For game threads a possible solution is to click on the header link of the last post in order to refresh the page without reloading it.  Or use Firefox.

It actually happens when I click the "show unread posts since last visit" link although it is a bit more subtle than hitting F5. The noticeable part is the banner and top "frame" with the various links, buttons, etc. I don't notice when clicking on other links. I haven't looked at the source so forgive me if that area of the page some new fancy pants version of a frame.

Looking at your UA, it looks like you're using IE8.  I don't have a machine with IE8 nearby to test with but it sounds like something IE8 would do.  Possibly not honoring the expires headers.  I'm not sure, but I'll look when I get a chance, and in the meantime revise my answer to "probably still no."

I'm not sure if this was sarcasm or not, but I'm just telling you what I know

And no it's not a frame or anything like it, just standard table/tr/td and div tags with some style sheets.

PS - you can use the DC logo at the right end of the banner for recent unread.  Not sure if you were being literal when you said "'show unread posts since last visit' link"

Ok. Thanks. :D

I am stuck with this browser, unless I want to load another one just for the small amount of personal browsing I do from work computer. Thanks pedantic IT department.

No sarcasm. This XHTML stuff you kids use these days confuses me. :old: Granted tables and DIV tags make sense.

What happened to the search function?

I have search disabled right now until I can update the API that runs the search engine backend I installed last year.  SMF's built-in search is terrible and bogs down the server.

I've added a google site search box to the top of the forum as an interim solution until I get the main search back online.

I'm actually considering not even bothering with the forum search function.  It uses precious resources and most people seem happy with a google site search box anyway.  I don't get the impression that the forum search got a whole lot of use before, and the people who do use it just nag about how much it sucks.

If you collapse the header you'd never have had to be reminded anyway :P

But even when it's not collapsed, it doesn't show, at least on the new theme.

Right, I was referring to the old theme.  Personally I think the header is wasted space and almost always keep mine collapsed.  I was going to remove it altogether, but some people use it.

I honestly didn't know you could collapse the old one...

The little plus/minus symbol on the right side next to the date/time, under the DC logo.
