I'd keep Cabrera, Desmond, Rendon and LaRoche.    The albatross is now named Zimmerman.

That would be ideal. Can Rizzo swing it? Doubtful.

Zim is clearly the one you love but wish you hadn't married.

Can't keep them both.  Cabrera wants to play shortstop and will leave if he can't.

But I'm using Ted's money.   I'd make him an offer he couldn't refuse.    :)

Would rather have LaRoche for another year

LaRoche will want multi years and will get it from someone.

From whom? I think LaRoche deserves a lot of money or a couple years, but who really needs a first baseman right now that doesn't have someone already or a player/prospect "ready"?

I'm not thinking too hard, so maybe I've missed someone, but I can't think of anyone who would need him for a deep run or would throw him money for a few years down the road. I really think his best bet on both ends is few years with some overpay. If they think Zimmerman can survive another year at third, I think he's worth it.

I think someone would.  I don't follow enough other teams to know their systems/players but someone like the pirates, a's, indians, mariners, etc. might?

Just for fun, want to go through the list and what I think given contracts and current players and whatnot.

BAL: Chris Davis is a lock.
BOS: Not sure, might be open.
NYY: Teixera inconsistent but probably a lock due to contract.
TBR: Loney contract lock.
TBJ: Encarnacion lock.
ATL: Freeman lock.
MIA: Might be destination, although not likely to push them over the edge.
NYM: Duda.
PHI: Howard. Probably should give up on him but won't.
CHW: Abreu lock.
CLE: Swisher likely a lock for contract.
DET: Miggy lock.
KCR: Hosmer lock.
MIN: Mauer lock.
CHC: Rizzo lock.
CIN: Votto lock.
MIL: Possible destination.
PIT: Alvarez can't play anywhere else so probable lock.
STL: Adams lock.
HOU: Singleton lock.
LAA: Pujols lock.
OAK: Possible destination.
SEA: Possible destination.
TEX: Fielder lock.
AZ: Goldschmidt lock.
COL: Morneau lock.
LAD: Gonzalez lock.
SF: Belt/Posey lock.
SD: Not close to competing.

I count 7 out of 30 that might want LaRoche after this season, and a few of those are iffy and banking on high hopes.

I would keep LaRoche at least for one season, maybe two and give him an overpay to stay here. He's been a huge MVP for this team this season and unless we do serious wheeling and dealing our team will look mostly the same next year. We need a good lefty bat. We need him to reel in wild throws that would be errors. If we don't do anything good to compensate for the loss of Cabrera and have Zim at 1B or 3B next season, I think we have trouble.

Getting out of the LaRoche business at the exact moment he declines is a lot more attractive to me than thinking that he's just going to keep producing.

Giving up someone that might produce for 2 more years because you're scared of what might happen could be trouble.

I would suggest only if he accepts a 1 year offer. If not, let him walk.

Milwaukee is gonna give LaRoche a sizable offer probably in the two years, $24 million range with a vesting option for a third year. First base is a massive need for them and they are a borderline contender. It's a great fit, assuming that they don't rekindle their trade talks with Colorado to get Morneau, who is an even better fit given his lower age and salary.

I would let him walk he is replacable but he isn't bad at all. It all depends on what he does in playoffs. If he keeps striking out like this show him the damn door

I don't agree. Werth and LaRoche both had big injuries over the past 3 years. They are both older. They came back, now they are raking. Great eyes, great hands, and pop are what those three players have in common. Zimmerman will do the same. Most of this is luck. He's older than he was but stuff like the hand is just luck. It happened to Harper too.

New England Patriots theory - when in doubt let them go a year too early rather than a year too late.

Absolutely.  I would think that every team has noticed by now that he is productive only in contract seasons.  Unless there is some team that's very dumb, he will not get a multi-year contract.  We should exercise our one-year option on him, and if he doesn't accept then we get a draft pick (I think).

Agree. Also his body seems to be breaking down. Of course so is Zimm's even if he is younger

No he's the supportive first wife you leave for a 20 year old when you make your first million.

I'm not looking forward to watching Desmond gift wrap key AB's for the opposing pitcher in the post season.
