Trading Desmond?
« Topic Start: September 12, 2014, 11:16:40 AM »
What do you all think the chances of Desmond being traded in the off-season?  Considering he rejected a long term deal for a two year deal, do you gamble that you can sign him to a reasonable contract after next year or think he will go to another team as a free agent?   I would think that after the season, the Nats should negotiate a long term contract, but if it falls through, trade him for players before next season and resign Cabrera and put him in at SS.  Just another topic for discussion.

He was nuts to not take that contract...the market was frothy as hell at the time and teams were signing all kinds of madness.  I would be surprised if such an opportunity were to present itself again.

I would trade Desi if we can get a big lefty power bat back. That's the only thing like Adams from St. Louis or Jay Bruce and stick him at 1b.

i dont understand the cabrera love, he has had a good two months, will surely regress and be a worse player than desmond. he isnt a good defensive ss and i dont think desmond will be prohibitively expensive. it really is starting to look like we shouldnt resign strasburg(considering giolito is basically his replacement and we have loas of young arms) so i would rather just plug ian in that spot for a few years.

I think we've enjoyed Desmond's peak years. Cabrera is only a short-term solution too though, even more so than Desmond; there are probably 4-5 more good Desmond years. We need middle infield depth and prospects. Maybe we can continue to help Cleveland with the logjam that Francisco Lindor is about to create. I don't know.

I don't like the idea of trading for 1B because Ryan Zimmerman needs a place to play in 2015.

if you are talking about dumping giolito and then some, the indians might listen. there arent loads of ss available, you have to develop them. we have none around

Unfortunately I think this is very true and Desmond is one of my favourite players in MLB today.  Nobody knows what was actually offered to him but if the AAV was more than his current deal and the length was greater than four years he was a fool, unless we go full maroon and give him a Tulo type deal.

The Cubs are thick in young SSs.   They need pitching.  Give them Detweiler and maybe a young arm, not Giolito for one of them.

They'd trade a short stop prospect for a guy who can't crack a rotation?

Have you seen the Cubs rotation?  He would be close to their #2.  Detweiler just lost out to numbers here.  I am sure there are many teams that would love him.

you're assuming the cubs are willing to part with a prospect to be marginally better next year

I don't see it happening. Think they will extend him to something close to the offer he already passed on. They they would need to find replacements for SS and 2nd. I love me some Azdrubal. But he's going to get some good money to go play SS for another team.

If we trade Desmond we'd be able to keep Cabrerra-  to play shortstop -  and we'd only need a second baseman.  If we keep Desmond, we lose Cabrerra and we're still looking for a second baseman. So, I don't see the difference....

...  Except, the trade Desmond/ keep Cabrerra  approach would be cheaper, an upgrade defensively at shortstop, 110 fewer strikeouts, overall better offense, at the expense of a few homeruns.

I like Desi but he's simply too streaky and doesn't walk enough to pay that kinda $ to. I don't know if Rizzo trades him though, I don't see us trading any of our big contributors. Probably just keep the core together and try to win at least one ring with them before retooling.
