I thought he would just eat himself into obscurity, but kudos to him for turning the trend around and doing what he was capable of doing.  What a beast of an offensive player.

Yes, because voting for the player who creates more runs by stealing more bases and having better defense at a more valuable position is so irrational! :hurr:

I'd vote for Trout too. I was just mocking Sabreheads because it's kinda fun.

Had the triple crown been traditionally thought of as average, HR, and steals, then there would be no question who had the better year.

1933 - Chuck Klein (NL)
1934 - Lou Gehrig (AL)
1942 - Ted Williams (AL)
1947 - Ted Williams (AL)

...the above are Triple Crown winners who didn't win MVP that year...if Cabrera doesn't get this year's AL MVP, he will be in distinguished company.

He's done something that hasn't happened since decades before he was born...and he won't get MVP, because another guy managed to have an even better season.

Baseball works in strange ways sometimes.

The only reason those on your list were robbed of the MVP is because their team ended up not making the playoffs. Their respective teams were runners up to the teams that won the pennant and the MVP went to a player on those teams. None of the actual winners had even comparable seasons (in my estimation) to the seasons put up by the ones on your list. This year people are suggesting that it should be the other way around and that leading your team to the postseason isn't as important.  :lmao:

The MVP award is for the regular season so I'm not real big on the Made-the-Playoffs angle. I don't think a player should be penalized for playing in a better division. FWIW the Angels had a better record than the Tigers.

I totally agree with you blue but for decades the criteria (or at least the way the voters have leaned) points to leading your team to the playoffs as meriting major consideration. That was the reasoning behind rewarding Sosa with the MVP over McGwire in 1998 (I hate to bring those two juicers up but it is what it is).

The Tigers wouldn't have made the playoffs with Cabrera.

Angels wouldn't have made it with or without Trout.

Hence, Cabrera is more valuable.

tigers would not have any other MLB division.  Cabrera would not have piled up numbers but for the cruddy pitching in the AL central.  The tigers have a good pitching staff, Prince and Austin Jackson, and traded for FORMER ALL STAR Omar Infante.  Andy Dirks and Quintin Berry had good years, and Alex Avila hit around MLB average OPS+.  Even if you ignore the defense, Trout had a better year.
