Washington NationalsSigned: RHP Preston Larrison, RHP Dan Leatherman, RHP Ryan Wagner, 1B Brad Eldred, OF Jemel SpearmanThe 28-year-old Larrison is the pick to click in this group. A Tigers’ second-round selection in 2001, he’s pitched in 100 Triple-A games and racked up a solid 3.49 ERA and just 84 strikeouts to go with 57 walks in 134 innings. However, he’s given up just seven home runs in that time, as he’s got one of the better—if not the best—sinkers on the market. His groundout-to-airout ratios in the past two seasons: 2.7 (Buffalo, ‘08), 3.0 (Toledo, ‘08), 3.0 (Toledo, ‘07). Yes, the double play will always be in the back of opposing managers’ minds.
Pretty cool that we got Eldred. He had 35 homers last season in the minors. Not a bad depth signing at all.
And 144 strikeouts and a .244 Avg.
True. But we got him to be an emergency call-up. If he can keep that OPS above .800 in a short stint w/ the Nats, that'd definitely be a positive.
A Ryan Howard clone?
A Ryan Ron Howard clone?
Fixed
Granted but the strikeouts and average are worth mentioning before the irrational exuberance begins. This team and its fans are starved for a masher.
Still hanging in there with Wagner. Nice to see Leatherman get some more time.
So the first time he comes up he strikes out, but the second time he comes up with runners on and 2 outs and this knuckleheads behind me decide to tempt fate.
It's all perspective. I wouldn't mind Brad Eldred being a Ryan Howard clone but it would take a unprecedented career year for him to make the leap. Since he's one of our guys I'll tempt fate by predicting it won't happen and hope to eat some crow next year.
He had more homeruns than walks, never a good sign.
