I'll be curious what the value of his stake is in the NYY. Didn't he buy them for less than we are paying Guz this year?

He bought them for 10 million dollars. Spent under 1 million in his own money as part of the 10 million dollar bid.

They're worth over a billion dollars now.

given how long they knew he was dying for, I doubt he still had a stake. If he did, good timing with estate taxes

He bought the team in 1973 and they won in 1977 and 78. Lerner got the Nats in 2006, so if you give him the same 'long time' we'll be winning this year?

As soon as the Messersmith decision, he opened up the purses. The Yankees already had Munson and few key guys in the system like Roy White, Guidry and Randolph (I think), but it was his quick plunge into free agency that earned him his rep. They were good as soon as 1974 (89-73, 2d in East).

Its so annoying. Granted, its the all-star break and the only other sport on is summer basketball, it was an all day thing for George...

They were even having people call in. Darryl Strawberry was probably the most understandable one. The others from what I saw were Aaron Boone (since he works there) and DICK VITALE. I mean HONESTLY. DICK VITALE?

not to disrespect Taylor, but Steinbrinner was the most polarizing owner in all of sports, and the team that he owned just happened to be the most popular team in the largest market in America. Besides, now that the Decision has made his decision, there is nothing happening in sports right now.
