he's on a pace for what, 30 this spring?

It will be REALLY interesting to see what Lombo does over the next few days.  The door is ajar now.

Jesus, I haven't watched it yet, but Design made two errors? Not only shouldn't he be the frontrunner for SS, but at this point he's playing so poorly, last Sept and now in ST, that it should be a near guarantee he isn't going to be any more than a bench player. I mean the guy can't hit. Continues to not hit. Continues to strike out... and his errors have always been shockingly frequent, which two years ago could be attributed to rookieitis. No longer. They made two errors today total, including a ton of guys like Rendon playing who haven't sniffed the majors. And both errors by Desmond. I want to see Rendon up ASAP and a combo of Espi and Rendon. This just isn't working with Ean Desmond.

Bold Prediction -  based off of 1 Spring Training inning.... Rendon is the starting SS in DC by September.

It's probably better for his ankles long term and his bat at short is absurd

Curious why he was moved off shortstop in college if he could play there.  did his college have somoen else who was a defensive wiz?

Yes, Rick Hague. Hague inexplicably had some D issues in his final year, but prior to that he was renowned for his range and general defensive ability.

so there actually is achance he's developed as a SS?  I don't think they would be trying him there if it wasn't even a possibility

Reminds me of Kinsler/ Pedroia at ASU.  Or Zimmerman, Upton, and Wright growing up.

Does he really have a chance to stick at SS? If they were looking for a new SS, I'd imagine Epsi would be the first to shift over. They must know something we don't

Ryan Sullivan @ NatsGM posted this report about Rendon at SS:

Quote
I spoke at length Saturday evening with someone involved with the Nationals and he could not stop raving about Anthony Rendon and how much the organization likes him as a potential shortstop.  I had never considered Rendon as a possibility at short, mostly because his body size and shape are not prototypical for the position, but then in the middle innings I look up and there he is playing shortstop.  This is an interesting subplot to this spring, and perhaps all season, because if he can passably play the position, his hitting potential makes him an all-star quality player.

I say go for it. Play him there. His defense will be better than Desmond's, and his offense projects to be WAY better. Imagine filling SS with that kind of hitting... That's HOF (too soon? I think not) potential.

Would make for a SICK infield.

How's his range?  In view of his ankle injury history, of course.

if the ankles are still a problem, I'd take short and decreased range over second with runners sliding to break up double plays

That's a good point.  Zimm would take pressure off him from getting everything in the hole.  Also espi would take pressure off of him on balls hit up the middle

Not really, how many balls does the 2nd baseman get to that a good SS would also get to?  There's not much overlap there.

More first hand accounts of Rendon @ Spring Training

William Yoder @ NatsBlog wrote:

1. Rendon's bat speed is legitimate. It's very rare, for me at least, to be able to look at a major league player and be able to eyeball one specific player that has superior bat speed compared to everyone else on the field. This was my immediate reaction to Rendon in his first at bat Thursday. I was incredibly impressed by his first cut, and his second cut resulted in a hard driven opposite field double that drove in two runs. A lot of people are excited about where Bryce Harper could be in July, but give it a couple months, and I believe the test of time will prove that Rendon will unequivocally be the major prospect storyline of 2012. He could legitimately push Desmond out of the shortstop position far sooner than we think.

2. At shortstop, Rendon looked serviceable. I only had a limited glance, but he certainly has the hands and the arm to play the position. I'm not 100 percent sure that he could ever be more than adequate, however, and while if you have an all-star caliber bat, an adequate glove can get you a long way, it doesn't seem reasonable not to insert the player who cold be a plus defensive shortstop, Danny Espinosa.

Could there be a double callup in May, Harper and Rendon?
