credit report
« Topic Start: October 27, 2011, 12:14:11 AM »
It's been a couple of years since I've ran mine.  I have a pretty good idea of where I stand, but just wanted to double check it.  What's the best place to have it done.  I know I'm able to get it done yearly but didn't know what the best way to go about it is.  Anyone done it recently that would have a place they'd recommend?

Q:   How do I order my free report?
A: The three nationwide consumer reporting companies have set up a central website, a toll-free telephone number, and a mailing address through which you can order your free annual report.

To order, visit annualcreditreport.com, call 1-877-322-8228, or complete the Annual Credit Report Request Form and mail it to: Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281. The form is on the back of this brochure; or you can print it from ftc.gov/credit. Do not contact the three nationwide consumer reporting companies individually. They are providing free annual credit reports only through annualcreditreport.com, 1-877-322-8228, and Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281.

i can't stress the importance of doing this at least once a year.  At a previous employer our secretary, who had access to all our personal info - SS #'s, DOB, you name it, opened up credit cards in several employee's names and ran up huge bills.   She had set up a PO box under a fake name to receive the statements so it couldn't be traced back to her.

Her scheme eventually exploded and she went to jail, but it was a mess for the people involved.  One found out when he went to buy a car, the other found out when he went to refinance his house.  Ever since then I've maintained a subscription to truecredit.com.  For about $90 a year they monitor three credit agencies and notify me if anyone accesses my credit report.  It's probably overkill, but I like having the peace of mind.

Not really, I do the same thing because of the type of work I do.  The last thing I need is some dumbazz stealing my identity to buy iPhones and carz from Eastern Motors.  It's a lot cheaper to pay $90/year and never need it then to try and untangle a mess of credit fraud later.

If you're not planning on opening new lines of credit, you can call the reporting agencies and ask them to put freezes on your account- it makes it more difficult to open a new line, but is a god solution if you don't plan on doing so

i think there's a time limit on that though?  so you have to renew it from time to time.

it varies by state

The one thing I will say is it makes certain things a pain in the ass. In addition to the obvious mortgage/car loan/credit card, you also have to un freeze to buy a cell phone, get cable tv... Still if you're pretty settled, it can be a good idea

Some of the credit card companies themselves offer this service to cardholders - Discover offers this as part of its identity-monitoring service for just $7.99/month with free access to FICO score and Experian report.
