Ryne Sandberg
« Topic Start: November 02, 2011, 05:00:47 PM »
The Cubs have reached out to Ryne Sandberg to tell him he's not going to be considered to be their manager.  Meanwhile St. Louis has interest in him to replace LaRussa.

Why wouldn't the Cubs give him at least a chance to interview for their job?

Wow. WTF are they thinking.

that they're about to go through a very painful building process, and why not alienate their real fans (if they have any left) in favor of the wrigley drunks at the same time

Francona is also supposed to be in the running for St. L.

For his health and family, I hope he takes a year off and just does an ESPN or MLB Network broadcast once a week.

He was terrific doing that, much better than I thought he'd be.

the interesting thing about wanting a former MLB manager is it takes out Hale and Dave Martinez, too.  A name to watch is Pete Mackinin. He's the bench coach for Sling Blade on the Philth.  He has ties to all 3 versions of the Nats, having worked with the Twins, the Rangers, and the Expos.  One of the first two candidates the Red Sox interviewed, along with Dale Sveum.  Has had some time as an interim manager.  I assume if the Sox had him identified, Theo would know about him, too.

[reading that again, it is MLB managing or coaching experience, so I guess Hale or even Bo Porter would be in the mix]

Maybe they don't like something in his managerial makeup/style. He's managed enough at AAA to at least have some reputation. Theo interviewed him for the Sox AAA gig and Ryne didn't get the job.

Why would you think that the Cubs should give him an interview?
