MINNEAPOLIS -- The Twins, looking to add experience to their rotation, signed former Nationals right-hander Ramon Ortiz to a one-year deal on Monday.

Last week, the Star-Tribune reported the then-pending deal to be worth $3.1 million.

Ortiz, 33, was 11-16 with a 5.57 ERA for the Nationals last season. He holds a 79-76 career record and 4.85 career ERA since breaking into the Majors in 1999, with his best year coming in '02, when he was 15-9 with a 3.77 ERA for the Angels.

The addition of Ortiz should add more of a veteran presence to a Twins rotation that has only two returning starters with more than a year's experience in the big leagues in Johan Santana and Carlos Silva. Boof Bonser is also expected to be a part of the rotation with Matt Garza, Glen Perkins, Scott Baker and Sidney Ponson likely competing for the final spot. The Twins signed Ponson to a Minor League deal earlier this month.

Twins pitchers and catchers will report to Fort Myers, Fla. for the start of Spring Training on Feb. 18.

DENVER -- The Rockies and right-handed pitcher Brian Lawrence have agreed on a one-year, $750,000 contract that includes a club option for 2008.

The Rockies were considered the leaders all along in bidding for Lawrence's services, but they had to stave off a bid from the Mariners. Lawrence will receive a $500,000 base salary, and the buyout on next season's option is $250,000.

Lawrence, 30, missed last season with a shoulder injury but pitched for the Padres from 2001-2005, going 49-61 with a 4.11 ERA.

The Rockies announced the agreement on Monday.

The Rockies enter Spring Training with as much starting pitching depth as they've ever had. Aaron Cook, Jeff Francis and Rodrigo Lopez, recently acquired from the Orioles, appear set. Right-handers Byung-Hyun Kim and Josh Fogg return from last year's rotation.

The presence of Lawrence and two young right-handers acquired this winter from the Astros, Taylor Buchholz and Jason Hirsh, means the Rockies can entertain trade offers, especially for Fogg, with whom the Rockies have a wide gap in figures submitted as part of the arbitration process. Fogg requested a $4.25 million salary for 2007 while the Rockies offered $3 million.

No longer. He was/is a type B free agent, but because he was non-tendered a contract, there is no compensation for him.
