I think being sharp going into the post season is pretty motivating, especially for this team that will hear nothing but Strasburg this and Strasburg that.  That will be incredibly motivating for this team.  This team has been been so incredibly locked in since that collapse to Atlanta and they just got that scab picked today by one of the worst teams in baseball.  This team won't lack for motivation.

I think that's Davey's number 1 goal down the stretch here is to put the pedal down and don't let up for one second. I think that's why you're seeing the starters stay in games, why they're still swinging and stealing bases with a 5 run lead, etc.,

I dig it - I think it's a great strategy.  Fastest way to derail momentum is to get complacent

104 wins is the real goal.  Why?  B/c then Bloo will be the WNFF prognosticator closest to the Nats final win total with his guess of 112!!!

Thanks Nathan.  For adding the poll I will now officially forgive you for costing Jordan Zimmermann a perfect game against the Phillies :P

Dafuq?

I seem to remember someone saying perfect game directly after I said no one better say certain words and then literally the next batter hit a home run to start the top of the 6th ;)

The Phillies are 29-21 .580 since the All-Star break. They feature 3 very good/excellent starting pitchers and player that is capable of nailing down the ninth inning. To cavalierly dismiss them as a poor team is the height of folly.

I think the Braves will collapse and we'll clinch the division with under 100 wins. Then Davey will rest some of the guys and give the September call ups some playing time.

Into the record books my friend. Most of our seasons simply went out the window early on and are gone, but this fine specimen has been preserved. It's delicate wings carefully opened up for all to behold their beauty.

As for the 100 wins it's still possible and we can do it. Will we? I don't know. Part of me hopes they do, but another part of me hopes they don't so that they will go deeper into the playoffs. It is difficult to keep piling on win after win after win. There are bound to be a few loses, but hopefully not many playoff loses.

I guess we're going to fall 2-3 wins short, because the Phillies are going to beat us in those last two series.  As soon as we actually clinch (which I'm guessing happens against Milwaukee after we take 2 of three from the Braves), Davey's going to ease off and let starters rest, let the AAA guys get some playing time, etc.  Won't be a long losing streak or anything, but enough that we could go 3-6 or 4-5 in the last nine games.

The only caveat is that if Davey decides to go for the best record in the NL, then all bets are off - we could do it.  That Dodgers series is going to be one to watch.

Yeah, as great as this home stand has been they can't let up so they have as little work left as possible heading into that final Phil/StL/Phil 9 game stretch.

uhm best record in the NL matters a lot this year b/c of the new playoff format.  Unless the Reds collapse, we'll be playing important games until the end.  Also, resting starters?  I thought if a starter skipped a start it was basically guaranteed they'd blow out their arm the next time they picked up a baseball.  At least thats what all the Strasburg shutdown people told me.

best record matters.  You want to face the team that had to blow their ace in the play-in game

Particularly since you'll have to face them starting on THE ROAD

(that still totally frosts my apples - at least the Nats have been good on the road this year -)

hopefully by next week we're changing the name of this thread to "110 win watch"

110-52 sounds really sweet.

9-6 in favor of 100 so far? More SSS members on WNFF than I think, perhaps.

I think it is a safe bet to say that the power surge we had over the past week is unprecedented in Nats history.  I certainly don't remember anything like this.  If this keeps up 100 may be selling us short.

But that's my point. Why would it be reasonable to expect this to continue?

Because the lineup is stacked with sluggers either in or entering their productive primes?

That and Davey + Eckstein = Magic Power Surge

Note: Twenty-five games left, and the 2012 team just passed the season record for home runs by a Washington team: 163 by the 1959 Nats. The old team had four sluggers (walk around the concourse, and just behind home plate you'll see who), but the 2012 team has power all through the lineup. A good sign.

#2, #3, #5, and #6 in the batting order are all likely to have over 20 HRs.  Morse has 13 in a little over half a season, and the Morse / Moore combo in in LF tops 20. Danny is likely to be just short of 20.  Werth looks like he is starting to drive the ball again and would have 20+ HR power when healthy.   We've even gotten 14 HRs out of the catchers.  That is a lot of distributed power,  even if it is likely that only one guy tops 30.
