I see no good reason to upgrade from Windows6 starter. Changing the background is not a good reason (couldn't I theoretically just overwrite the background image while booted off a linux cd?

How in the world did you get stuck with a starter edition?

Netbook I suppose.  Doesn't it have some weird stipulation about only 3 apps open at a time or some such nonsense?

My netbook. Just upgraded from 1 to 2 GB ram and I'm rolling right along. Streaming video works fine in high performance mode. These little atom processors seem pretty great (I went with the 32 bit one at costco for the return policy, in case i decided I hate the thing, could have gotten the 64 bit one from amazon, but the old model has a bigger HD for mp3s and movies). iTunes was taxing the thing :(, so I upped the ram, but I've been compiling code on it even. First time I ever went with Cygwin instead of a Linux install (for obvious reasons on the netbook), and it works great.

No application limits, Homegroups work, remote access works, everything I need works. I don't use Media Center, it really seems fine. Microsoft even screwed up a limited OS

What exactly is the benefit of Cygwin over a Linux install?

Using the processor on other machine to do the heavy lifting. Also, Samsung tricks you into creating a 4th primary partition on first boot, so that you can't install linux without removing one of their THREE backup partitions :bang:

You can install Linux in a logical partition, can't you?

Nope. Ubuntu threw a temper tantrum. And it was the netbook flavor no less.

I'm pretty sure I have done it before, but it's been a long while since I had a PC.

But if you already have Windows on a primary, plus 3 primary back up partitions, I guess you can't really make an extended partition anyway.

Sounds like you've got a pretty good thing going, seems you've answered your own question.  I mean, unless you absolutely have to have Aero Glass :P

OneNote- anyone find it useful? Freeware note organization programs are awful, and it seems at the very least like a cheap way to mark up pdfs without springing for Acrobat.

I'm shocked Apple dorks haven't managed to come up with any new jokes after all these years, what with Jobs releasing revolutionary magical new somethings-or-anothers every year or two :icon_mrgreen:

Time savings. If what you want or need linux for is part of cygwin.

Occasionally cheap platform migrations of commercial software.

I've got an old laptop that seems to be loaded with junk that runs in the background and upon startup.  Is there a decent utility I can use to clean some of that crap up?

Running Windows Professional XP 5.1

www.ubuntu.com

Naw Chief knows of something, I'm pretty sure.

I doubt you're going to be able to get flash video of much quality to play on those specs.  That's not really that bad of a laptop for just basic web surfing, but as Nathan said, flash is a pig.

SF - try "CCleaner" - nice little app that does all that stuff for you in one go.  Will clean obsolete entries out of the registry too.

Looks good to me.

^^That won't remove background startups automatically though.  There's really no way around doing that manually unless you simply disable all of it, which while effective at speeding things up will - for the typical user - usually disable at least one or two things that are actually needed.

Here's my favorite way to establish a baseline for a "clean" startup:  start, run, "msconfig" <ok>, go to the "services" tab, check "hide all microsoft services" then disable everything else that's left (uncheck it).

Next, click the "startup" tab and click "disable all"

Hit OK, reboot.  There are a few types of programs that will re-insert themselves into the startup list even when you do this, but for most cases this - in addition to running ccleaner - will give you as close to "new" as you can get.

(attached some screenshots to illustrate what i'm talking about)

Yeah, I had tried the CCleaner once before, it didn't do a lot of what I need.  I'll try the startup thing you mentioned, thanks.

Disable all.

I did, I figured I could go back and enable if I'm missing something.  I also had a page and a half of startup junk.  Disabled all that too.

I was actually talking about the startup programs

As for the services, one or two might be your antivirus software.  The McAfee ones.  Chief?
